I hope you are all enjoying the hot air balloons and your dogs are not too scared of them !
If your dog is scared when hot air balloons pass overhead, the fear is usually triggered by the size, unusual shape, and low rumbling/burner noises- all of which are unfamiliar and can feel threatening to a dog.
Here’s the immediate steps you can take when a balloon is overhead
1. Create a “safe space”
• Bring your dog indoors, close curtains/blinds, and muffle outside noise with TV or calm music.
• Offer a favourite blanket, crate, or bed where they feel secure.
2. Distract with high-value rewards
• Give a stuffed Kong, favourite chew, or play a gentle game to shift their focus from the balloon.
3. Stay calm and neutral
• Use a calm, normal voice and relaxed body language. Reassure you dog.
4. Use sound masking
• White noise, fans, or music can help cover the burner whoosh and low hum of the balloon.
Immediately put them on lead & go home if you see a balloon going over!
If your dog’s reaction is extreme—shaking, bolting, or not eating—working with a force-free trainer or behaviourist can speed up progress and ensure your dog feels safe.
