How to keep your birds cool in hot weather...

💧Water - fresh drinking water, with added electrolytes, or a good quality multivitamin will likely have all the ingredients. Place drinking water in the shade

🌬Cool the coop - place the coop in a shady spot. Heat can build up to uncomfortable levels inside the coop, and it can take a long time to cool down. Ensure the door is open and the ventilation holes are open fully to let the maximum air flow through. This is especially important for broody hens!

🌴Shade - trees and large shrubs, or even large planters, are ideal for providing shade. Use a sheet, towel, or parasol to keep direct sun off the ground

🚿Cool the birds - ensure birds have access to a dust bath. Garden sprinklers, or a spray bottle, are ideal to create a fine mist. Menthol can also be sprayed in the environment (not on the bird). This has a cooling effect as it evaporates.

🪰Flystrike - birds will drink more and eat less in hot weather. This can upset their guts and cause wet faeces - keep a close eye on those fluffy butts! Dirty vent feathers are an invitation for fly strike!!!

Red mite season is nearly here!

🌞The weather's starting to warm up, which means the red mites are too! One of the first signs of a red mite infestation, is that you feel itchy after being around your birds.

🩸Red mites are tiny blood sucking parasites that live in the chickens environment, they can be a significant health risk, and in severe infestations, they can kill your birds!

🙋‍♀️ They will crawl onto anything warm blooded in the hope of a blood meal including humans or other pets. They can cause irritation and dermatitis in humans.

👀Start checking for red mites now before they become a problem for your and your birds. Don't wait for the red mites to find you!
