Online is very common to see trainers post that their client has been to loads of trainers. They will be finally the one that can actually train the dog.

Usually force free training or tools use gets the blame. It’s either too much fairy dust throw at a dog or it’s been yanked on a prong.

As an over thinker I come to different conclusion. Hear me out I’ve been to terrible trainers myself and trainers are to blame. But, clients don’t do what we ask them. See no change get disappointed and off to find the next person that they hope will fix their dog. Unfortunately, you doing an hour training with me and than nothing. Will lead to nothing.

Training requires time and effort and change of your habit. The only way you will get results if you actually do the work with support of your trainer. No the next no pull harness or I know better and I won’t crate train my dog.

Ziggy no longer the nervous dog with no recall that I met! But a teenage collie mix fully off lead enjoying chasing squirrels!

As its wet and cold now! If you would like to get 50 percent off my e-collar sessions message me”wet lead” and the first 10 people get to enjoy the discount. You must be able to travel to Bristol as well as purchase an ecollar before the training starts. Open spaces until the end of the month!

Let’s break it down for our dogs.

One of my day trains we spent the first 4 day trains in empty car parks. Why? Because he didn’t know what I wanted from him. Me trying to teach it while 10 dogs were running past is unfair on him. As one is enough to set him off.

Guess what the issue was fixed in 3 months. I took my time broke it down and slowly entendres busier and busier places.

Week 1 of your training empty car parks are your best friend. Give your dog a break for a week from the triggers. Crack on with their training.

Week 2 ask a friend to join you with a dog or without and start adding some small distractions. For example if your dog struggles to listen around other dogs. Have a dog in a down that your friend holds. While you train 5m away. Showing the dog the picture your after.

Layers, that’s all I want you to remember

Tell me a story of how your dog decided to chase prey and what it took to get them back 😩🫣

I will start, Carlos has water. But he jumped in a pond chased a swan. The swan hissed he decided wasn’t worth it, got out and bolted across wetlands. We had to ask builders that were doing work in the area. To help us, my dad got in a car with them and drove around wetlands looking for him. He was just there chilling watching birds by the water.

I will pick a random winner, from the comment section and offer free dog training support.

Digging is natural and you can’t get rid of it.

You can show your dog when is appropriate to dig and when is not

Digging in the garden is not allowed but on walks he can dig up mole holes and on the beach he digs his life away.

As a terrier he digs to catch prey, he has caught a mole or two in a past 🫣

Perky has a cue „dig” (in polish) and I point at the area and he digs. It’s very helpful in the garden he’s helped my dag before 😂.

So many dogs I see don’t have appropriate outlets for their breed type.

Tools don’t shut down dogs. Poor use of them, with training slapping them on a first session.

No tail down, no lip licking. As I have spent time conditioning both tools.

All my clients have to have great basics and a marker system for tools to be layered on top of.

Corrections given once the dog knows the behaviour, not just randomly for anything.

I spent more time conditioning these then anyone does with a harness and a lead. With confused dogs being yanked about on lead by frustrated owners. But, it’s force free.

If you want to use tools work with a trainer, invest into your training.

Your dog is more anxious and frustrated as your unclear with them what you are after.

I meet many owners who have no clear rules and boundaries for their dog. Today they are allowed to jump on people the next day they are being shouted at as they jumped at the neighbour.

If you don’t know what is expected of them how should they know?

Also many dogs are allowed to do anything they want in the house and on walks. Then you suddenly want to go another way and they don’t. Many dogs are so use to doing what they want, I seen many dogs end up bitting their owners in frustration when the owners doesn’t let them get their way.

This doesn’t get better or goes away on its own. Same way as Perky struggling to switch off around working dogs won’t go away. I had to work on it. I will be honest I use to avoid classes as he would whine and bark. I got told just to throw food in a snuffle mat. Once the food stop he went back to being even more angry. With a 12kg if I carried on just feeing he would be obese by the end of the 6 week class.

If you are struggling with your dog, reach out. Sometimes all it takes is a clear marker system to help your dog not feel frustrated and improve your relationship.

Your dog needs rules and boundaries to thrive the way we have rules and boundaries in our life.

I seen quite a lot of hate recently on the word obedience crop up again.

Obedience does not mean be a robot. It means actually showing a dog what you want from them in different situations. These dogs are happier then the ones with lack of feedback from you.

Please please, before you take your dogs on all these trips. Teach them skills they can use in different situations.

My recent trip to Cornwall reminded me how much my hard works with my dogs payed off.

1. New place - slept all night settled
2. Walked around the endem project on a short lead
3. Slept in the crate while we visited the domes which are off limits for dogs.
4. Off lead on a beach they were never on before
5. Walked past loads of dogs and people without a single reaction.

This is all thanks to cues I can use to show them what I actually wanted from them. Please don’t fall for this trend of just dogs be dogs. They live in our world with our rules. At least we can do is show them what we are after. Not expect them to just it in.

I don’t mean sir is the most important skill in all this. Things like recall, less walking and settle are always needed. Feel free to prove me wrong.
