Staffies get labelled as terrible pullers and the standard fix is ‘corrections’ (shorthand for yanking the dog’s neck on the lead).

For a breed with a short, thick neck and that much muscle behind it, jerking on the lead is genuinely risky for the spine.

Same dog, three days apart. No corrections, no force, just clear teaching and a hand lure that faded out fast.

Positive reinforcement isn’t instant, but it’s a lot quicker than people think, and a lot kinder than the alternative. And it’s more effective in the long run

Full disclosure, I’m a bit biased on this one. I share my life with a Staffie called Ziggy Staffdust (spot the Bowie fan) who you’ll be seeing plenty of across my feed. Living with a Staffie is its own thing, and this breed gets misjudged more than most. Here’s what’s actually going on with them.

When you’re thinking about how you want to train your dog, think about the relationship you want with them, not the commands you want them to obey. Once you do, positive reinforcement isn’t just a training method - it’s the only thing that makes sense.

Two working breeds, a coat that needs serious maintenance, and genetics that mean no two are the same. Worth knowing before you fall for the face.
