🐢💚 “EDGAR ELLAND POE” 💚🐢
Yesterday morning a little Hermann’s tortoise was safely handed in to us after being found in Elland. We’ve given him the nickname Edgar Elland Poe (because every tortoise deserves a proper title 😅).

He’s now settling in nicely in our heated tortoise building, with plenty of fresh weeds to munch on and a safe space to rest. 🌿☀️

We’ll be keeping him comfortable while we work to reunite him with his rightful owner.

⚠️ Important reminder: Reptiles can be very expensive to buy and keep, and sadly some people are quick to offer to “take them in” without having the correct knowledge, equipment, or housing. For the animal’s welfare, a found reptile should never be handed over to a random member of the public. Always take it to a reptile shop or rescue where it will be safe, properly cared for, and given the best chance of being reunited with its owner.

👉 If you ever find a lost reptile, here’s what you should do:
1️⃣ Secure it safely in a ventilated container.
2️⃣ Contact local pet shops or reptile rescues.
3️⃣ Check local lost & found pet groups.
4️⃣ Only release to someone who can prove ownership.
5️⃣ Keep it warm, quiet, and safe until help arrives.

Quick action and responsible handling can make all the difference in reuniting a beloved pet with its family.

🌿🕷️ WHAT A DAY AT HIGHWAY PETS! 🕷️🌿

Wow – what a busy day we’ve had in the shop today! A big thank you to everyone who came by 🙌 Plenty of mantis found their way into new homes – some going to experienced keepers and others to complete beginners just starting out in the hobby.

💚 If you’re a newbie – welcome to the insect-keeping family! Don’t worry, we still have plenty of mantis in stock if you’re looking for a cool, unusual, and fascinating little pet.

📸 We managed to snap some brilliant photos throughout the day… and here’s a fun one: have you ever seen a tarantula’s “paw” up close? Tarantulas actually have tiny claw-like tips and sticky hairs on their feet which help them climb, grip, and even walk upside down on smooth surfaces – pretty amazing, right?

We’re open again tomorrow 10am – 5pm, so if you missed out today, pop in and say hello! 🦎🐢🕷️

A hermans tortoise has been handed in at our shop.
If you believe this little one may belong to you, please contact us.

⚠️ Proof of ownership will be required before we can release him.

We’ll share more details once he’s settled, but for now we’re keeping him safe and cared for.

🌸 Look at this little Flower Mantis go – shaking her b***y like she’s queen of the bug world! 💃✨

Say hello to the Pseudocreobotra wahlbergii, also known as the Spiny Flower Mantis – and she’s every bit as fabulous as she looks:

🪻 They get their name from their flower-like patterns on the wings, which they flash to scare off predators.
🪻 Their “b***y shake” (that side-to-side sway) isn’t just for fun – it helps them blend in with flowers moving in the breeze.
🪻 Despite being tiny, they’re skilled hunters, snacking on flies and other small insects.
🪻 They don’t need big enclosures – perfect little showstoppers for mantis keepers of all levels.

Cute, colourful and full of character – the Spiny Flower Mantis is proof that the best things come in small packages! 🌺🦋💚
