As temperatures rise, keeping our pets safe and comfortable is a top priority. Dogs handle heat much differently than humans, making proactive care essential during a warm spell.
🐾 Essential Tips for Summer Safety
1. Master the Walk Times
Avoid exercising your dog during the hottest parts of the day (typically between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM).
• Early & Late: Stick to early morning or late evening walks when the air and pavements have cooled down.
• The 5-Second Test: Place the back of your hand on the pavement. If you cannot comfortably hold it there for five seconds, it is too hot for your dog’s paws.
2. Hydration and Cool Treats
Creative hydration keeps things interesting and cool.
• Ensure fresh, cool water is available in multiple locations around the house.
• Drop a few ice cubes into their water bowl.
• Feeding dog-safe frozen treats, or filling a toy with dog-friendly ingredients and freezing it, provides a soothing, cooling activity.
3. Create a Cooling Sanctuary
Help your dog find a respite from the rising indoor temperatures.
• Keep curtains and blinds closed during the day to block out direct sunlight.
• Use damp towels or specialized cooling mats for them to lie on.
• Set up a fan to keep the air moving, ensuring they always have the option to move to a cooler room.
4. Optimize Outdoor Time
If your dog enjoys being outside, ensure it is done safely.
• Always provide accessible, deep shade.
• Consider a shallow paddling pool filled with cool (but not freezing) water for them to splash in.

Protecting Your Dog: Recognizing the Signs of Heatstroke

As temperatures rise, it is essential for dog owners to understand that our canine companions process heat much differently than we do. Since dogs primarily regulate their body temperature through panting and a limited number of sweat glands in their paws, they are significantly more susceptible to overheating.

Early intervention is critical. Please be vigilant for the following clinical signs that your dog may be experiencing heatstroke:

Key Symptoms to Watch For

🐾Excessive or Distressed Panting: This is often the first and most obvious sign of distress, but remember it is normal for dogs to pant when they are warm, it's how they cool themselves down and is their equivalent of us sweating.
🐾Hypersalivation: Look for thick, ropey drool or excessive foam around the mouth.
Changes in Gum Color: Gums that appear dark red, purple, or unusually pale.
Lethargy and Disorientation: Reluctance to move, stumbling, or appearing "spaced out.
🐾Gastrointestinal Upset: Sudden vomiting or diarrhea can occur as the body struggles with internal heat.

Immediate Action Steps

If you suspect your dog is overheating, move them to a cool, shaded area immediately. Offer small amounts of water and begin cooling them by dousing their coat with cool (not freezing) water.

Heatstroke is a medical emergency. Even if your dog appears to be recovering, internal damage can be progressive. We strongly advise contacting your veterinarian immediately for a professional assessment.

The car park was a bit of a nightmare the latter half of the morning today due to a wedding taking place outside a neighbouring property. Which, although a pain, looked amazing!

It's all clear now!!

☀️ Keeping Your Dog Entertained in the Heat ☀️
With temperatures set to soar this weekend, it's important to avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest parts of the day. But that doesn't mean your dog can't have fun!
Try some of these heat-friendly games and activities:
🧊 Frozen Treasure Hunt – Freeze some of your dog's favourite treats in ice cubes or a container of water and let them work out how to get them out.
👃 Scent Games – Hide treats around the house or garden and encourage your dog to use their nose to find them.
🥣 Puzzle Feeders & Lick Mats – Great for mental stimulation and can be made even more refreshing with chilled or frozen toppings.
💦 Paddling Pool Fun – Many dogs love splashing around to cool off. Add a few floating toys for extra entertainment.
🎾 Gentle Indoor Games – Short sessions of tug, trick training, or hide-and-seek can help burn mental energy without overheating.
❄️ Frozen Treat Time – Frozen dog-safe treats can provide both enrichment and cooling relief.
Remember, if it's too hot for you, it's probably too hot for your dog. Stick to early morning or late evening walks, ensure fresh water is always available, and provide plenty of shade and cool resting areas.
