We are a long established specialised sanctuary and cherished home to dogs and horses who had nowhere else to go.

Our animals have behavioural issues and long term health problems etc and we provide them with a permanent, safe, happy life here with us 💖 We are The Birkett~Smith Animal Sanctuary and we are a rarity in the UK as we are one of the largest sanctuaries to take in both human and dog aggressive dogs and rehabilitate them. We are also one of the the very few UK sanctuaries that will take aggressive a

nd fear aggressive dogs and we rehabilitate these animals as much as we can over time to enable them to enjoy their forever home here with us or to go back out into the world with new skills. We provide forever homes for just under 100 dogs, a few cats and some farm animals including sheep, horses, geese and chickens. Information Announcement PLEASE READ:

With a small team, I run a long-established, specialised and cherished home to dogs and horses who had run out of options and had nowhere else to go. I am no longer operating as a registered charity under the name of BSAS (The Birkett-Smith Animal Sanctuary 1152016) simply because we are in the process of deregistering.

Nothing has changed for my beloved animals who all have behavioural issues and long-term health problems etc which prevented them from being able to live in a conventional home and who I provided and continue to provide with a permanent, safe, happy life 💖
I am simply just going back to how I started on my smallholding in Dorset in 2011.

Going forward, my band of beauty’s will all come under the name of ‘Joy Keys Animal Support’ JKAS for short 😊

Sundays are for cuddles in the sunshine says Boss baby ☀️🥰 Our ‘cheeky’ Boston boy has been with us for yonks…..he’s a bit of a monkey 🙊 and needs careful handling at times but where there is a will there is a way (that should be our motto! 🤣) When he is in a particularly ‘cheeky’ mood the staff have a “rub a dub” song which they sing to him and it works like a snake charm enabling them to pick him up and give him some love and fuss 💖
Yep 🤣 like all our dogs he is a real individual but if music be the food of love….play on 💖🐾🎶

Possibly the most beautiful dog in the world….well we think so anyway 😍 Our darling girl Vivi just enjoying her peaceful, happy life 💖 😍 She’s not keen on the big bad world and is suspicious of the camera but she does love a quiet sniff walk, a little run around on the longline and a gentle play with her little bunch of dog and human pals 💕 She just melts our hearts 🐾💕

'Vivi' is part of a Spanish word that means freedom and for those of you that don't know Vivi's story here is some backstory. Vivi arrived at the sanctuary in June 2016 for some major rehabilitation and a permanent home with us. Vivi was very sadly the victim of horrific sexual abuse and sustained violence; the hell she came from was too disturbing to even recount and for her safety and the safety of her rescuers, her past remained in the past. Suffice to say it is a miracle she survived but survive she did and she was saved by a dedicated group of angels who can never be thanked enough. Her physical injuries were repaired but her mental scars were deep and unbelievably painful. When she came to us she was completely shut down and traumatised to the point that all she wanted to do was hide away from the world. She was terrified of everything, the outdoors, cars, people, being touched and would defecate and urinate when approached especially by men understandably. Before she arrived, Joy and Dave worked quickly to create a special area for her in the sanctuary house under the stairs where she could be quiet and alone whilst still being close to Joy and where there would be no danger of her even hearing a male voice. She immediately went into hiding in her new den on arrival and she was one of the worst behaviourally effected dogs we had ever seen. Just watching her and imagining the hell she had suffered turned our insides out but Joy knew she could help her. Her story has been baby steps all the way since but love and Joy's patient, no demands rehabilitation won out. She has come as far as she could and is still profoundly affected and her emotional issues will never completely heal but she knows she is safe and she lives a peaceful, contented life at the sanctuary and is happy 💖 She is a precious, precious girl who enjoys her gentle life and she is very deeply loved by us all 💖

Best pals Bailey, Peaches and Todd having fun in the sun ☀️ 💖🐾

Beautiful Bailey came to live with us after assessment via rehab. And although this lovely boy couldn’t make it into a conventional home because of his issues, he found his forever home here with us and we are so glad he did 💕🐾

Perfect Peaches originally came from her rescue for rehab but she was unsuccessful in finding the very special home she needed so she unpacked her suitcase, put out her ornaments, hung her curtains and moved into the sanctuary permanently and made us her forever home 🏡 She is a lively, very bouncy girl so she gets lots of exercise and she loves a cuddle with her trusted people 🍑

And Toddybod has been here donkeys years, a rommie that used to be one handler only 💖 Like many of our kids he can still be reactive with the unknown but originally on arrival he was non touch and highly reactive. He has long since been multi handler with senior staff and loves a bit of fuss and cuddles of course 😍

The sun has got its hat on in Dorset and Iggle Piggle is out and about having fun and cuddles 🥰 Iggypigs was an owner hand in many moons ago. He came to us dog reactive and highly human reactive and it takes months for him to trust someone new but once he loves you he really loves you. He also loves life and finds much amusement in it ❤ Don’t be fooled by that butter wouldn’t melt look....he’s a total joker and a wee terror who adores playing silly games and chase and generally trying to scare people 😱😀 but it’s impossible not to love the bones of him and of course we do 💖

Little Ralphie enjoying cuddles with Matt after a windy walk 😃🤩 Ralph came in via a rescue after a lovely Avon representative saw him being kept in a bird cage in a house she visited 😠🥹 He was a tricky customer and still can be but he has mellowed ‘some’ over the years 😂 and is a fab character who loves his life ❤ He lives with his best friend, Cave Girl, one of our gorgeous senior rommies 😍💖

😄 Heeeeeere’s Frankie! Frankie is our little spitfire who came from Boston UK. She is a hyper girl, can be human reactive and guarded unusual objects in the home avidly... so much so she would chase people round the house to protect her treasures which was a bit of an issue 🫣Here with us however, her ‘quirks’ are not a problem and she spends her days happily wearing herself and everybody else out 😀💖
