Summer holidays day 40…..

🐔🥚 Did you know we have poultry too? 🦃🐣

That’s right — not only do we care for a wide variety of animals, but we also have chickens and turkeys right here on-site! (And technically, even our ostriches count as poultry too 😉)

Our chickens and turkeys aren’t just adorable — they also play an important role in our sustainability efforts. We raise them primarily for egg production, and those eggs don’t go to waste! Several animals in our zoo enjoy eggs as a nutritious part of their daily diet.

It’s all part of our commitment to creating a more self-sustaining environment for the animals in our care — reducing waste, enriching diets, and making the most of our resources 🧺🌿

Next time you visit, keep an eye out for our feathered friends! You might just catch them hard at work helping out behind the scenes. 💪🐓

🐫 Happy Hump Day! 🐫

Did you know there are two main types of camels?

🟤 Dromedary camels have one hump and are built for hot, desert climates — think North Africa and the Middle East.
🟤 Bactrian camels have two humps and are better suited to colder, rugged environments like Central Asia.

And here’s a cool local fact: Bridlington Animal Park is home to 5 Bactrian camels! 🐪🐪🐪🐪🐪
Double the humps, double the charm.

Drop a 🐫 in the comments if you’ve ever seen one up close!

🎵 "Bridlington, My Way" (to the tune of "My Way") 🎵

(Verse 1)
And now, the end is near,
The school bell’s tolling, I can hear it…
But first, before we gear
For sharpened pencils and new spirit—

We took a final ride,
To stretch the summer just a tad more,
To Brid, on Yorkshire's side,
Where goats and lemurs we adored.

(Verse 2)
Regrets, there may be some,
We didn’t camp, or climb a mountain—
But here, where peacocks strum
Their feathers proudly, fun was fountain'd.
We fed the wallabies,
And watched the meerkats chase and play-time—
The parrots squawked with ease,
It felt like laughter held in rhyme.

(Chorus)
Yes, there were times, I’m sure you knew,
We fought in queues, or lost a shoe—
But through it all, when tempers flared,
We found the snacks that Mum had spared.
We faced it all, stood near the fall—
And did it Brid’s way.

(Verse 3)
We drove the Yorkshire trail,
And let the summer drift like daydreams,
The ice cream didn’t fail—
Though half of mine fell on my jeans…
But more, much more than this,
We made a memory worth saving—
The kind you look back on,
When days at desks feel soul-deflating.

(Final Chorus)
To say goodbye feels bittersweet,
To sun-baked fields and days of heat.
But as we pack our bags once more,
We know what summers still are for—
To run, to play, to end this way…
We did it Brid’s way. 🎶

🐾 Tasty Tuesday! 🐾

Let’s talk about one of the most complex (and carefully crafted!) diets we prepare here at the zoo — the daily menu for our Asian short-clawed otters! 🦦

These little dynamos may be small, but their nutritional needs are anything but simple. Each otter gets around 350g of food per day, and no two days are exactly the same. Their diet is designed to mimic what they’d eat in the wild, while also supporting their health in human care.

Here's a peek at what’s on the otter menu:

🦀 Crustaceans like crab – a favorite that also provides calcium and enrichment through shell-cracking!
🦪 Shellfish such as mussels – packed with protein and great for keeping their teeth and jaws strong.
🐟 Roach (5 days a week) – a lean freshwater fish that makes up the bulk of their fish intake.
🐠 Oily fish like sardines (2 days a week) – these are rich in essential fatty acids that support coat and skin health.
🥕 Vegetables like sweet potato and carrot – for fiber and a little natural variety.
🍗 Meat, including chicken – another source of protein and variety.
💊 Aquaminivit supplement – because otters are prone to kidney stones, this specially formulated supplement provides vital minerals and Vitamin B1, which can be lost during the freezing and thawing process of fish.

But food isn’t just about nutrition — it’s also a big part of enrichment and training!

💡 We scatter feed or hide their food around their habitat to encourage natural foraging behavior and keep them mentally stimulated.

🎯 High-value items (like crab or oily fish) are often used in target training, helping keepers work closely with the otters for health checks and positive reinforcement.
It’s a full-time job keeping up with these intelligent and active animals, but their happy squeaks and healthy appetites make it all worth it. 💙

🌿 Monday Maintenance 🌿

This week’s project: a fresh new substrate for our Brazilian porcupine and striped skunks! 🦔🦨

We’ve replaced the old flooring material in their enclosure with natural bark chips, and here’s why:
🌱 Comfort & Enrichment: Bark provides a softer, more natural surface for our animals to walk, dig, and explore. It mimics the forest floor they’d encounter in the wild, encouraging natural behaviors and keeping them mentally and physically stimulated.

🌬️ Odor Control & Drainage: Bark helps absorb moisture and controls odors better than many other substrates. It allows for proper drainage, which keeps the enclosure drier and more hygienic overall.

🛠️ Easy Maintenance: It’s easier to spot-clean and replace bark as needed, making daily care smoother for our animal care team.

🌎 Eco-Friendly Choice: We use sustainably sourced bark that breaks down naturally over time, aligning with our commitment to environmentally responsible practices.

Stop by this week and see our skunks and porcupine enjoying their fresh new digs—you might even catch them foraging or digging around in the bark! 🐾

Bank Holiday at Bridlington Park

On a bright Bank Holiday, off we did go,
To Bridlington's park, with a warm sunny glow.
Capybara were lounging, the meerkats were sly,
Parrots squawked stories as time ticked by.
The kids ran wild, with joy in their eyes,
Feeding the goats and spotting the flies.
Wallabies bounced through the fields so wide,
With giggles and crumbs from snacks we supplied.
But whispers of school hung low in the air,
Just one week left—“It’s so unfair!”
Still, memories made in the sun’s golden light,
Made the thought of school feel almost right.
So here’s to the animals, laughter, and play,
A perfect adventure to end the holiday!

🌟 Sunday Staff Snippet 🌟

Meet Heather – Our Education Officer!
You may recognise Heather from our reception desk, but did you know she brings with her a wealth of experience from a 27-year career in teaching? 📚🍎

Heather graduated from St. Martin's University in Lancaster back in 1995 and went on to teach in several primary schools across the North West. She then spent 13 wonderful years at a village school in Antrobus, Cheshire, eventually becoming Deputy Head.

In 2008, Heather completed her NPQH at Manchester University and took on the role of Headteacher at a primary school in Crowton, Cheshire, where she led for 14 years with passion and dedication.
After nearly three decades in education, Heather decided to take her skills in a new direction — and we’re so lucky she did! She’s now our brilliant Education Officer here at Bridlington Animal Park. 🦉🐾

Heather looks after school visits, college and vet student placements, and staff CPD training — bringing learning to life in the most inspiring ways.

We're thrilled to have her as part of our team! 💚
