A great CPD day with colleagues learning how saddle fit impacts hoof wear, movement and muscle health.

Facinating to see how a horse’s profile can improve with the use of shims as the interface between saddle and horse……allowing free movement and muscle development.

Donkey hoof trimming is fun but getting toe height just right can be a challenge. Trim a little, check angles and trim some more. When you get there, you know……that last lateral hairline check just feels good, like muscle memory ☺️

This donkey was on a 9 week trim cycle through winter……concrete was doing a good job of wearing hooves and keeping them tidy. Now with faster spring growth, hooves are getting taller and distorted. Time to reduce the trim cycle to 5/6 weeks.

An interesting CPD afternoon with a colleague. Looking at how the right antecedents and choice of food reward results in super relaxed clicker training sessions.

Here we are introducing the target for the first time. This pony has experienced just a handful of clicker training sessions before……about 6 months ago, so he understands calm default (standing still for food rewards).

Lovely to see how relaxed he is with a low value, soaked hay cob reward. And happily engaged in the process despite the abundant grass 😊

One of my favourite grasses for horses. Hopefully identified correctly as Creeping Bent🤞

Copes with some soil compaction and covers bare ground with surface-running stems (stolons), forming dense mats if allowed to establish.

Most importantly, the stems are tough and fibrous, providing cellulose to feed the hindgut microbiome.

Unimproved native grass species can be obtained from Emorsgate Seeds……worth adding some into your pasture to increase diversity. Be careful to select species suitable for your soil type

When you move your horse from an over grazed area to a field with abundant green grass and over the next few days he still produces healthy dung piles, you know you are providing enough diversity, hedge browse and tall fibrous grass (or hay) for him to feel relaxed and self regulate.

Consistent dung which falls into individual balls is a sign of a stable hindgut microbiome……happy gut microbiome, happy horse. It is of course more complex but it’s a good start.

NB. Not all horses get a good start in life. If they cannot develop a healthy hindgut microbiome in the first 4 to 5 months of life their hindgut health may always be a little compromised. These horses may not cope with grass at all. Other horses have insulin resistance so be very careful with the green stuff that is growing fast at this time of year.

The last 4 photos were taken in the same field.

A beautiful Thoroughbred foot for inspiration. Thank you for brightening my day EquiHarmony 😊

I’ve been trimming this lovely Thoroughbred mare for just over a year now. These are her feet pre-trim today 🙌
Hoof health isn’t about quick fixes — it’s about consistent trimming, good management, and giving the hoof time to grow stronger each cycle.

Hooves respond incredibly well to a short trim cycle.

Starting here with hooves on a 10 week trim cycle…..ending with the result of 6 months on a 3-4 week trim cycle.

Love how the heel purchase has improved and the bars are working their way back to where they belong……by September the remaining distortion will have mostly grown out. Bars will be much straighter and heels pulled in and less under-run, as new hoof wall grows in without flare.

In 12 months these hooves will be beautiful 🤩

I am very grateful to my brilliant mentor Cat, Fit For A Queenie for her guidance and support during this case study 🙏

Update on growing out a hoof crack. Wall height removed in quarter area to reduce leverage on hoof crack…..every 3 weeks initially and now every 4 weeks.

6 months progress…..old crack now stable and growing out.

If the papillae of the coronet band are complete (no permanent damage or scarring) the remaining hairline crack should grow out completely. Another six months of regular trims should see an end to the quarter bulge and underrun heels, allowing a tight, undeviated hoof capsule to grow in.

Nice to see how quickly the coronet band can relax back to a normal position when given the chance.
