Farm Vets South West

Farm Vets South West FarmVets SouthWest is a farm-animal-only veterinary practice covering Somerset and East Devon.

The practice prides itself on traditional service values, but with a modern approach, to complement the needs of today's farmers. We have an experienced team of farm vets, with expertise in the dairy sector. We are really excited to announce the opening of our fourth practice, in Shepton Mallet, Somerset and welcome our new colleagues David Jackson and Candido Rodriguez.

Ever wondered what our vets are looking at when they are scanning your cows?

Here’s a sneak peek that one of our vets Matilda took from one of her routine fertility visits 🐄

👀 Take a good look at the image - can you spot:

🐮 The calf’s head?

🐮 The heartbeat flicker?

🐮 Maybe even a little leg?

Regular scanning helps us keep your herd on track for calving patterns, fertility targets, and herd health.

If you’d like to get your next PD session booked in, ring any one of our branches 📞

🌟 Happy Vet Tech Appreciation Week! 🌟

This week, we’re celebrating our amazing Farm Vet Tech team - Georgia, Laura, and Sophie - who work tirelessly to keep our farmers and their animals thriving 🐄🐑

Our farm vet techs play a vital role in supporting animal health and welfare every day. From running and managing the calf scheme to mobility scoring, vaccinating and TB testing, they’re the helping hands that make farm life run smoothly.

Please join us in saying a huge THANK YOU to Georgia, Laura and Sophie for all their hard work!

🌍 World Mental Health Day – 10th October 🌱

Today is a reminder that mental health matters just as much as physical health.

Farming and agricultural life can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also be tough and isolating at times. The long hours, unpredictable weather, and financial pressures can take a toll - and it’s okay to admit that things feel heavy sometimes 💚

There is no shame in asking for help. Reaching out can make a world of difference - for you or someone you care about.

If you need to talk, please know there are people ready to listen:
📞 RABI – 0800 188 4444
📞 Farming Community Network – 03000 111 999
📞 Vetlife – 0303 040 255
📞 Samaritans – 116 123
📞 Mind - 0300 123 3393

Let’s look out for one another. Check in on friends, neighbours, and fellow farmers. A simple conversation can mean more than you know.

💬 You’re never alone. Together, we can make sure no one in our farming community struggles in silence 🌾💚

👏🏻 GOOD NEWS STORY 👏🏻

Recently our vet Victoria attended a rather tricky case after a freak accident. The mischievous calf caught itself on a gate latch and created a puncture wound into its chest (ouch)! Victoria cleaned the wound and stitched it back perfectly together and now the little rascal can breathe easy! Well done Victoria 👏 🐄

⚠️ Acorn Poisoning Warning ⚠️

This year is a mast year, meaning oak trees are producing unusually large numbers of acorns. Combined with the recent stormy weather, many acorns are falling early, including immature acorns, increasing the risk to cattle.

We’ve already seen a rise in cases of acorn poisoning in the past few weeks.

👉 Signs to watch for include:
- Off feed, dull or weak
- Constipation followed by dark/tarry diarrhoea (sometimes with blood)
- Swelling under the jaw
- Excessive thirst and reduced urination

🚫 Unfortunately, there is no specific antidote, and treatment is often unsuccessful once severe kidney damage has occurred.

✅ Prevention is key:
- Check pastures regularly for fallen acorns
- Move cattle away from high-risk fields
- Provide extra forage to reduce temptation

If you have any concerns about your herd, please contact us immediately. Early intervention gives the best chance of a positive outcome.
