This week’s blog shows you how to build it step by step, positively and patiently.

💛 I love collaborative training — here’s why… 👇
I just wanted to share something I genuinely value in training sessions: when clients arrive with ideas, suggestions, or a plan for what they’d like to work on.

Your insight into your dog’s day-to-day behaviour is invaluable. You see the patterns, the struggles, the wins, and the little quirks that sometimes don’t show up in a single session. When you come with thoughts or goals, it helps us work with the dog you have in front of you and makes our time together even more productive.

Of course, there will always be boundaries, criteria, and moments where I may redirect the plan based on what your dog is ready for that day — but that’s all part of good, ethical training. Your ideas combined with my experience create a collaborative, flexible approach that keeps things achievable, fair, and effective for your dog.

So please don’t ever feel you must turn up and wait to be told what to do. Bring your questions, your worries, your hopes, and the things you’d love to improve.

Together we’ll shape the session, layer the learning, and build skills that truly support you and your dog. 💛🐾

Sue Watkins owner of Connected Canines

I live on the beautiful Somerset Levels with my family and dogs, Labradors and a Working Cocker Spaniel. My earliest memory is of being a toddler and being surrounded by a litter of Labrador puppies, bred by my parents. My passion for dogs was ignited and has remained with me ever since.

I have had dogs of my own for many years, both rescued and bought as puppies of assorted breeds, and challenges.

For five years I worked for a Greyhound rescue charity, as a regional re-homing officer. We dealt with all types of sight hounds and within our area we re-homed about 150 dogs a year - all with differing histories and needs.

Fifteen years ago, I decided to have a change of tact and stopped working in rescue and decided to run my own business. I still dealt with dogs and their owners, but I supplied them with food designed to meet their differing nutritional needs. I hold a Certificate in Companion Animal Nutrition (QCF Level 3) awarded by COAPE.
