The Oesophagus

Another really interesting piece of information from the Ireland dissection I recently went on.

This is my finger through the oesophagus!

I wanted to share this with you because the horses oesophagus is something we rarely think about.

Its internal diameter is only 3–5 cm. That’s all the space a horse has to move forage from mouth to stomach.

It’s a muscular tube, so it can stretch just enough to move chewed food along.

With a tube that narrow, it’s no surprise horses can choke when feed isn’t chewed properly, when they bolt their food, or when dry fibrous material swells on the way down.

I couldn’t beleive how snug it fitted around my finger!
