Top 4 Training Mistakes You Could Be Making With Your Dog (And That’s OK!)

We all love our dogs and want the best for them, but sometimes, even with the best intentions, we make a few training slip-ups. No shame here, we’ve all been there!

1. "Sit… sit… sit… SIT!"
If you're repeating cue words like you're stuck on loop, then you could be training something else entirely! One word, one chance, then we help them succeed by making the exercise easier.

2. “But he does it at home!”
Dogs aren’t great at generalising. Just because they can lie down in the kitchen doesn’t mean they’ll do it in the park with squirrels saying 'chase me'! Practice in different environments starting at home, then the garden, then a quiet park before expecting your dog to perform in busy places.

3. Saying “Uh Uh!” or “No!”
These words don’t teach your dog what To Do. Swap these for showing them the right choice instead. Dogs love clarity and, of course, rewards!

4. Forgetting to reward the good stuff
Caught your dog doing exactly what you wanted but didn’t say a word? Oops! Reinforce those calm sits, quiet moments and polite greetings.

A few weeks ago, The Dogz Unleashed squad had a very special visit.

We were incredibly honoured to welcome His Excellency, Ambassador General Cheikh Wade of Senegal and his delegation, to our family farm during his official visit to Wales
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 🤝🇸🇳.

Despite the rain and mist, spirits were high as we shared our approach in trialling regenerative farming practices as well the traditional Welsh sustainable livestock management that we implement.

It was a real privilege to be part of this important knowledge exchange — with the hope that some of what we’re doing here might support Senegal’s agricultural development.

We all have so much to learn off each other - was fascinating to hear about Ambassador Wade’s Mango farm in Senegal 🥭.

A memorable visit and a proud moment for our family 🌱🌍🐑.

Lovely news for all of you kind folk that were concerned about the blue tit chicks that were nesting in our cigarette bin.

Over a period of several consecutive days, we had not heard any tweeting coming from the cordoned off area that we’d put in place to protect the nest.

So, we decided to take a peep and found that the nest was empty.

We were delighted to see the little chicks must have grown strong enough to fly the nest and are hopefully living their best life 🪺 🐣❤️.

Thank you to all of you that have shown concern and interest in them 🥰

Need to start your puppy off on the right paw in their education?

Come and join us for the Puppy Power Course held on Saturday mornings at the Westward Community Centre in Bridgend. This is a 6 weekly course which starts 1st March at 10am.

Your puppy will learn - life skills such as settling nicely, keeping 4 paws on the floor instead of jumping, walking nicely on the lead, coming when called, how to wait patiently and have fun on the puppy agility course.

You will learn - what motivates your puppy to learn, how to read your puppy, how to train your puppy with fun, kind, fear free and effective methods, the best equipment/toys and how to avoid common problems.
