Summer can be a challenging time for horses affected by skin allergies and environmental sensitivities.

Signs can include itching, rubbing, hair loss, urticaria (hives). In some cases, further investigation may help identify potential triggers and support longer-term management plans 🔍

Our vets can advise on:
* Allergy investigations
* Environmental management
* Symptom control options
* Individual treatment plans where appropriate

Our patient here, Fred🐴, recently underwent investigations for recurrent hives and skin irritation.

Following assessment, intradermal skin testing was performed to help guide his ongoing management plan. Longer-term allergy management options were discussed with his owner, including immunotherapy as part of his ongoing care.

Skin allergies in horses can be complex, and not every case requires allergy testing. Our vets can help advise on appropriate investigations and management options depending on the individual horse.

If you have any concerns about your horse’s skin health then please contact the practice for advice 😊

So pleased to see this boy back in work after his lucky escape last month. A real testament to his strength and the incredible care he’s received after sustaining a horrific shoulder wound.

🐴 Today, Alex examined Wish after her owner noticed she hadn’t been quite herself under saddle. Thanks to the owner’s vigilance, we were able to investigate early.

Using our portable gastroscope, Alex diagnosed erosive, bleeding pyloric ulceration—something that would certainly explain the change in her behaviour.

The good news is she has now started a course of ulcer medication and should be feeling much more comfortable and back to her usual self in the coming weeks 💛

If you notice any changes in your horse or pony’s behaviour, don’t ignore them—early investigation can make all the difference. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any concerns.

Dentals , dentals , and more dentals! 😬🦷🪥

Regular dental exams are a vital part of your horse’s overall health & wellbeing.

Signs your horse may need a dental check:
🔹Dropping feed (quidding)
🔹Weight loss or difficulty maintaining condition
🔹Head tossing or resistance when ridden
🔹Bad breath

We recommend dental examinations at least once a year, though some horses may benefit from more frequent checks depending on age and individual needs.

⚠️WARNING: GRAPHIC IMAGES IN THE COMMENTS🩺🩸🚨

On Sunday, Alex was called out to a horse that had managed to create a rather impressive wound on the left side of the neck, right over the jugular groove! On first look it was deep enough to fully expose the jugular vein😲, and one of the superficial neck muscles had also been lacerated.

After a good clean and plenty of flushing, the aim was to reduce as much dead space as possible, so the deeper tissues were brought together with subcutaneous sutures. The skin was then closed with simple interrupted sutures placed with very little tension.

Because of the location (and the amount of movement in this area), the owner was warned that there’s a very good chance the wound will break down around the 7–10 day mark. If that happens, the sutures will still have done their job by acting as a biological dressing, protecting the wound in the early stages and hopefully setting things up nicely for second intention healing.

So far, so good, and the owner will keep us updated and sutures are planned out at 12–14 days if all stays well. 😅👍
