🌡️ HOT WEATHER WARNING FOR DOG OWNERS 🌡️

This week’s temperatures are set to be incredibly high, so I wanted to share a few reminders for all my wonderful dog owners.

As someone who spends every day caring for dogs, I know how easy it can be to underestimate just how dangerous hot weather can become for them.

Dogs don’t cope with heat the same way we do, and heatstroke can happen far more quickly than many people realise.

🐾 One of the simplest things to remember is this:

If the ground is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.

Before heading out, place the back of your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds. If you can’t comfortably hold it there, please don’t ask your dog to walk on it.

This week, even early mornings and late evenings may still feel uncomfortably warm, so it’s important to use your judgement and put your dog’s safety before their usual routine.

A missed walk is not going to harm your dog.

Heatstroke might.

Instead of long walks, consider:
🧊 Frozen enrichment treats
🧩 Snuffle mats and puzzle games
🎾 Indoor play sessions
🌳 Relaxing in shaded areas
💦 Cooling mats or paddling pools
🐶 Short training sessions to keep their minds busy

As dog owners, we often feel guilty if we can’t give our dogs their usual exercise, but on days like these, keeping them cool and safe is the priority.

🚨 Signs of overheating can include:

• Excessive panting
• Drooling
• Bright red gums
• Weakness or lethargy
• Vomiting
• Disorientation
• Staggering or wobbling
• Collapse

If you notice any of these signs:

✅ Move your dog somewhere cool immediately.
✅ Begin cooling them with cool running water.
✅ Focus on the chest, belly, armpits and inner thighs.
✅ Encourage airflow with a fan if available.
✅ Offer small amounts of water if they are able to drink.

Then contact your vet immediately and make your way there as quickly as possible.

Please also remember:

🚫 Never leave a dog in a parked vehicle.
🚫 Don’t assume shade alone will keep them cool.
🚫 Don’t force exercise in hot weather.
🚫 Don’t use wet towels draped over them as these can trap heat.

The dogs in my care will have their routines adjusted throughout the week to keep them comfortable and safe because no walk, adventure or play session is worth risking their wellbeing.

I’d much rather disappoint a dog for an hour than put them in danger.

Stay safe everyone, look after yourselves, and give your dogs an extra cuddle from me. ❤️🐾

Nothing beats watching happy dogs doing what they do best! 🐾

This morning was filled with wagging tails, zoomies, games of chase, and plenty of happy faces. Seeing them run freely, make friends, and enjoy their time outdoors is what it’s all about.

Every dog deserves a chance to stretch their legs, explore, play, and come home tired and content. These moments are the highlight of my day! ❤️

🌦️ Whatever the weather, the fun doesn’t stop! 🐾

We tried our best to stay ahead of the rain today, but with a sky like this, it was always going to be a challenge! Just look at those incredible storm clouds rolling across the countryside – nature certainly knows how to put on a show. ☁️⛈️

This happy pup wasn’t bothered by the dramatic skies one bit and enjoyed every minute of exploring, playing, and burning off some energy before the rain arrived! 🐾

Whether it’s sunshine, clouds, or the occasional dash for cover from a shower, we’re always out making memories, having fun, and giving dogs the exercise and attention they love.

☀️🐾 HOT WEATHER WARNING FOR OUR FOUR-LEGGED FRIENDS 🐶❤️

With temperatures rising and the heat wave arriving, our pets can struggle much more in the heat than we do. Dogs in particular can overheat very quickly, especially during walks, playtime or when left in warm environments. Heatstroke can become serious fast, so it’s really important we all take a few extra precautions during the warmer days ☀️

Here are a few simple ways to help keep your dogs safe, cool and comfortable:

💦 Make sure fresh, cool water is always available
🌳 Keep them in shaded, cool areas where possible
🚶‍♂️ Walk early mornings or later evenings when temperatures drop
🔥 Avoid hot pavements — if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws
🧊 Cooling mats, damp towels, paddling pools and frozen treats can really help
🚗 Never leave dogs in cars, they are better left at home. Dogs can die in hot cars!

Please also keep an eye out for signs of overheating such as:
⚠️ Heavy panting
⚠️ Excessive drooling
⚠️ Weakness or tiredness
⚠️ Vomiting
⚠️ Bright red gums or tongue

If you think your dog is overheating, move them somewhere cool immediately, offer water and contact your vet if needed ❤️

At Homes Hounds & Horses, your pets’ wellbeing always comes first and during this hot weather extra care and attention makes all the difference 🐾🤎

Stay safe and give your furry friends an extra cuddle from us ☀️🐶🐴
