inspiring tails

inspiring tails Offering both in-person and virtual dog training. My proven methods inspire the change you both deserve 💙 🐶

At inspiring tails, we believe that every dog is an individual. It's so easy to compare your dog to others and give them labels according to their breed, age, or s*x. While every breed will have certain traits, these do not define the dog. We like to look at what you WANT from your dog, rather than what you DON'T want - this helps shape your training and in turn, grow the behaviours that are impor

tant to both you and your dog. Most importantly, through games, fun, and a passion for creating an amazing relationship between dog and owner, we will help give you the confidence and knowledge to grow a bond that will last a lifetime!

Trick 4 - ‘Leg Weaves’ A really fun trick with lots of benefits! **

What leg weaves can help with:

🐾 Improved Focus and Body Language: Leg weaves require your dog to pay close attention to your body movements and cues, strengthening their focus on you.
🐾 Enhanced Coordination and Body Awareness: The weaving motion helps dogs develop spatial awareness and coordination, particularly of their rear end.
🐾 Mental Stimulation: Learning new tricks like leg weaves challenges your dog’s mind and keeps them mentally engaged.
🐾 Physical Exercise: Weaving provides a good stretch and workout, especially for the dog’s sides.
🐾 Fun and Bonding: Leg weaves can be a playful activity that strengthens the bond between you and your dog through positive interaction.
🐾 Foundation for Dog Sports: Leg weaves are a fundamental skill in canine freestyle and other dog sports, making it a great starting point for more advanced training.
🐾 Confidence Building: Successfully learning new tricks like leg weaves can boost your dog’s confidence.

**Please discuss with your veterinary practitioner/canine physio therapist if you are in any doubt about doing this one with your dog! Any new tricks/games should be done safely and should only be done if they are suitable for your dog**

Trick number 3 - ‘Nose Touch/Hand Target’ Teaching a dog a nose touch or a hand target, is a great training tool with lots of practical uses!

What a Nose Touch can help with:
Redirecting Focus: A nose touch can be a quick and effective way to redirect your dog’s attention away from potential distractions like squirrels, other dogs, or even people. It provides an alternative behaviour to jumping up, barking, or other undesirable reactions to exciting or scary things. By offering a target, you can guide your dog’s focus and help them stay calm in various situations.
Building Confidence & Trust: Nose targeting is a positive and rewarding experience for your dog, helping build confidence in their interactions with you and in new environments. It teaches them that human hands are safe and can lead to positive reinforcement. It can be particularly helpful for dogs who are nervous or apprehensive about physical contact.
Foundation for Recall: A nose touch can be a great starting point for recall training. It can be used to lure your dog back to you, especially in distracting environments.
Versatile Training: Nose touch can be used as a building block for various other tricks and behaviours such as agility training where it can help your dog learn to target specific objects or areas. It can also be used for husbandry tasks like grooming or vet visits, making them less stressful for your dog.

Yesterday we beat the heat and were up & out early for our first reactive dog walk.

I’ve wanted to do these for a long time and the amazing scoped out the perfect route for us to try our first one.

The point of the walks isn’t for millions of dogs to get together. The point is for a few reactive dogs & owners to step out of their comfort zone and try a walk they might not otherwise do. Practice their training in a new environment surrounded by likeminded people, support & understanding.

The first walk might have been small in numbers but it was huge in terms of success 🥰

If you’d like to know more or join one of our reactive dog walks, drop me a DM and let’s chat!

Trick number 2 – ‘Paws up’ - Really fun but also practical! Always make sure the object you are using is safe & stable.

‘Paws up’ can help with the following:

Confidence Building: For dogs that are nervous or worried, putting their paws up on an object can help them feel more comfortable and secure.
Bonding and Communication: Trick training, including ‘paws up’ provides a positive and engaging way for you to interact with your dog, strengthening the bond and improving communication.
Redirection: If a dog is distracted or displaying unwanted behaviour, the ‘paws up’ command can be used to interrupt and refocus their attention.
Physical Benefits: The ‘paws up’ position can engage different muscles and improve flexibility, especially when practiced on various surfaces and heights.
Practical Uses: It can be a useful for situations like getting a dog into a car, lifting them onto a surface, or redirecting their attention away from distractions.
Brilliant Photos: ‘Paws up’ can be used to get some amazing snaps of your pups! Check out the video below to see how versatile it can be

With the hot weather upon us again, I’m going to post some daily ‘tricks’ you can teach your dog while it’s too hot to take them out on walks :) All you’ll need is your dog & some treats or kibble!

The first one is ‘Middle’ helps with focus, bonding, & safety. Middle can help with:

Recall - encourages your dog to come in close & focus with you
Distractions - can be used to redirect their attention and provide a positive alternative focus
Bonding - Helps provide a sense of connection & security
Confidence - for some dogs going through legs can be scary!
Management - helps keep your dog close in busy places & can help prevent unwanted behaviours (e.g. launching at strangers)

Steps for teaching ‘Middle’
Step 1: Throw a treat away from you. When your dog turns back to you, show them you have a treat in your hand & lure them around the outside of your leg
Step 2: Once your dog is in the middle of your legs, mark & reward
Step 3: Release your dog away by throwing a treat away from you & then repeat steps 1 & 2
Step 4: Once your dog is consistently coming between your legs, add in your cue e.g ‘Middle’ or ‘Centre’ or ‘Legs’ etc

Go slow! Some dogs find going around or through/between legs worrying. Don’t force them, don’t rush. Have fun with it & post your videos below 🐾🎉👇

Such a simple cue, but so so useful!

You always want to build things like this in the absence of triggers so that your dog is calm, and you also avoid the cue becoming a trigger for a trigger 🙌
