For the safety of all dogs, please do not attend your grooming appointment if your dog has shown any signs of sickness or diarrhoea within 48 hours of their appointment due to the heightened risk of Parvo in the area.

We’re being extra cautious with newborn puppies at home, and appreciate your understanding

‼️ URGENT NEWS ‼️

Over the weekend we have had a case that we strongly suspect to have been Canine Parvovirus in a dog in the Ambleside area.

Canine parvovirus is highly contagious in dogs. It classically produces signs of lethargy, vomiting and bloody diarrhoea. About 9 out of 10 dogs will die if they contract parvovirus.

The virus can potentially remain active in the ground for several years.

Routine dog vaccinations are highly effective at preventing the disease.

If your dog is up to date with its vaccines you do not need to take further action.

If your dog has not had a vaccine within the last year we strongly recommend that you have them vaccinated in the very near future. If they have not been vaccinated within the last year they may require a vaccination restart which consists of 2 vaccines, 4 weeks apart. We currently have a vaccine amnesty program running where you pay for just the one vaccine. This offer ends at the end of August.

May starts tomorrow… and coat changes are on the way!

As the weather begins to warm up, you may already be noticing changes in your dog’s coat, more shedding, areas loosening, or coats starting to feel a bit heavier.

This is the time of year when grooming becomes really important to help keep your dog comfortable and well maintained.

Please don’t wait until your dog is already too hot or struggling with their coat, by then, options can be more limited and spaces are not always available.

Pre-booking is key this time of year, especially as the diary fills quickly. A well-timed groom can make all the difference to how your dog feels heading into the warmer months.

Quick question… have you ever used your own shampoo on your dog? 👀 🐾

It might seem like a quick fix when they’re muddy or a bit pongy… but it’s actually not the best for their skin.

Dogs have a very different skin pH to us, and using human products can lead to itching, dryness, redness or irritation, sometimes without you even realising that’s the cause.

Over the years, I’ve spent a lot of time researching what works best for the dogs in my care, and that’s why I use professional grooming products designed specifically for dogs, only the best!

If your dog needs a deep clean after muddy walks, something gentle for sensitive skin, or help with itchiness, using the right product really does make a difference... not just to how they look, but how comfortable they feel!

I’d love to know, what do you currently use at home for your dog? If you’re ever unsure, I’m always happy to point you in the right direction.

Lost Dog Awareness Day... 💔

It’s something none of us ever want to think about… but being prepared can make all the difference.

Today is a good reminder to check you have everything in place, just in case your dog ever goes missing:

Up-to-date photos- make sure you have clear, recent photos of your dog, including full body and close-up shots.

Microchip details- are your contact details current? Especially if you’ve moved or changed numbers.

ID tag- a simple but vital one, your dog should always wear a tag with your contact details.

Secure equipment- check collars, harnesses and leads are well fitted and in good condition.

You may also want to consider a tracker on your dog’s collar, these can be really helpful in locating them quickly if they wander.

Losing a dog is every owner’s worst nightmare, but a little preparation can help bring them home much faster.

Take a moment today to double check, it’s well worth it!

There’s been some updated guidance from the British Veterinary Association (BVA) and British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA) on neutering... and it’s really interesting.

In simple terms, the advice is moving away from a “one size fits all” approach.

Instead, vets are now encouraging decisions to be made on an individual basis, taking into account things like:
• Your dog’s breed
• Their age and development
• Their lifestyle

For many dogs, especially males, it’s now being suggested that neutering later (around 12–24 months) may be more appropriate, once they’ve fully developed, but it’s not the same for every dog.

The key message is:
👉 There isn’t one “right” answer for every dog anymore
👉 It should always be a discussion between you and your vet

As someone who works closely with so many different dogs, I find this shift really interesting, every dog really is different.

What are your thoughts?
Have you had this conversation with your vet?
Was your decision straightforward, or did you weigh up a few options?

If you’d like to read more, here’s the full article:
https://www.bva.co.uk/news-and-blog/news-article/updated-neutering-guidance-from-bva-and-bsava-moves-away-from-one-size-fits-all-approach

New BVA and BSAVA policy position recommends a contextualised approach to neutering dogs, while advice for cats remains unchanged.

If I were to get a puppy tomorrow… 🐶💭

Here’s exactly what I’d do to get them salon-ready and set them up for a happy, stress-free grooming journey from day one:

🖌️ Start brushing little and often - just short sessions to begin with, always with a few treats to make it a positive experience. You’re not aiming for a perfect brush-out - it’s all about building trust and getting them used to being handled.

🔊 Use an old electric toothbrush to gently stroke their legs - it mimics the feel of clippers and helps desensitise them to new sensations.

🚫 Don’t let your puppy chase the hoover or bite at the hairdryer. It might seem cute now, but it creates unhelpful habits that make future grooms much more difficult.

💧 Don’t wash your long-haired puppy unless you can dry them properly - damp coats left to dry on their own can quickly turn into matting, which is uncomfortable and painful to brush out.

Book their first salon visit around two weeks after their final vaccinations. Early familiarisation is key to building confidence and creating a lifelong, positive relationship with grooming.

And most importantly, I’m here to help! Whether it’s advice on the right equipment, brushing tips, or just reassurance, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Adder season is here 🐍🐾

I share this every year, but it’s well worth repeating as a reminder. Adder season starts in March, so it’s something to be mindful of right through the warmer months.

You may already have spotted one or two while out walking... Adders are the UK’s only native venomous snake, and although they usually avoid people and dogs, a curious sniff or accidental step can sadly result in a bite.

They’re often found basking in sunny spots, especially on paths, heathland, and grassy verges, so it’s worth being extra aware when out and about.

If your dog is bitten by an adder, it’s important to act quickly:

🔹 Call your vet immediately – not all practices carry anti-venom, so you may need to ring around.
🔹 Carry your dog to the car if possible – this can help slow the spread of venom through the body.
🔹 Gently cool the bite area with cold water – this may help reduce swelling while you travel.

Adder bites are an emergency, and prompt veterinary treatment gives your dog the best chance of a good outcome.

Oakhill Veterinary Group can assist in cases like this and can arrange anti-venom if needed. It’s a useful number to keep saved just in case:
