DAY NINE AT SOI DOGS

Walking through the reception area today felt very different because I know I only have one day left at Soi Dogs. My clothes are covered in fur, my shoes are ruined, and my heart is completely full.
I walked some amazing dogs today, almost all of them are blind. Some heartwarming moments, Anka who’s had both her eyes removed, hates going for a walk, but when I got her into the dog run she found a tennis ball, she put it in her mouth and happily walked around for over 30 minutes, she only dropped it when she returned to her pen.
Lots of fun in the dog pool today, there was times when I was wetter than the dogs.

Tomorrow is my final walks, my final cuddles, and the hardest goodbyes.
If day one was about the excitement of meeting them, day nine is about the sadness of leaving them.

DAY EIGHT AT SOI DOGS

Today I had a day off from Soi Dogs. Thailand is a long way from home (14 hour flight) and I wanted to experience a teeny bit of this amazing place. I have felt guilty all day, thinking about the dogs I could have been waking instead.
Anyway, I went on a 5 island boat trip, I did some swimming in the sea (completely unheard of for me), walked through a cave, had a canoe ride, had lunch on a floating island and went to the James Bond island. It was a fun day.

The dogs never left my thoughts, so thought I’d introduce you to Zenya.
Everyday at Soi Dogs we walk our assigned dogs in the run, at the end of the day we are allocated a kennel dog, we have the same dog for the whole 2 weeks. These dogs live alone in a kennel for various reasons, so they get a nice long walk daily.
My dog is Zenya, he’s 14 years old and has been at Soi Dogs all his life. He’s deaf and blind, but that doesn’t stop him enjoying life. He’s an absolute sweetheart and loves his walks, I do have a soft spot for him, and will miss our time together when I leave.

DAY SEVEN AT SOI DOGS

Every day we are assined a different dog run, but today I was given D1 which I had previously done one day last week. This is my favourite run as there is a real nice mixture of dogs in it. But, what makes it even better is one dog in particular. Her name is Marshall, probably one of only a few dogs names here I can actually pronounce.
I told myself not pick a favourite when I first came here, but Marshall made that impossible. I’ve spent so much time feeling sorry for these dogs, but Marshall spends zero time feeling sorry for herself.
If you look at her surroundings, you’d see a concrete kennel in a crowded shelter and despite everything she’s been through, she is the happiest, mischievous, best girl. If Marshall can be this happy, what’s my excuse?
This girl really has stolen my heart.

The first few photo’s are of Marshall, the last one of her is when she was brought into the shelter (what a difference).
The other pics sre the rest of the dogs in run D1 that I walked.

DAY SIX AT SOI DOGS

Today’s kennel was a mixed bunch of blind, tripod and very shy. Also lots of fluffy dogs. Lots of walking, lots of pool time, lots of patiently hanging around with the shy/nervous ones who half way round their walk refused to go any further.

Today feels like my new normal, a week in and I’m almost coping with the Phuket humidity, the chaotic barking on day one now sounds like a background hum, and the perfume of choice is a mixture of disinfection and wet dog.
I’m coping a bit better emotionally too, today was the first day I didn’t have a little cry. So all in all a gentler day.

DAY FIVE AT SOI DOGS

A little late with this post. Friday’s group of dogs was the special needs kennel. The morning started with lots of 3 legged dogs, it was humbling to watch them tear across the grass in the dog runs, with more joy than most healthy dogs. These dogs really don’t know they are different.
In the afternoon, my special needs kennel dogs were the ones that had every reason to hate humans. They’ve been scalded, beaten and discarded.
It’s hard to look into the eyes of a dog that has been intentionally harmed by a person, but we aren’t just walking them, we are rebuilding a broken dog with trust, one step at a time.

It has been a tough week, physically and emotionally. To end the week a majority of the volunteers met up for dinner on the beach. It was a lovely evening and nice to get to know them a little more. Safe to say we all have one thing in common, our love for DOGS.

DAY FOUR AT SOI DOGS

Today’s shift at Soi Dogs felt a little different.I spent my time in the senior and special-needs runs.
There’s something incredibly humbling about these dogs, whether it’s managing mobility issues or just providing a calm presence for a blind dog, or supporting a tripod dog.
It’s less about the high-energy sprints and more about the very slow strolls we took. They might move much slower, but their spirits are just as bright.
It’s a quieter part of the sanctuary, but it’s filled with some of the most resilient souls I’ve ever met.

To finish off my day I was given a crazy teenage dog to walk, who loved his pool time. ( see video).

The weather was a little cooler, with a much welcome breeze. Early to bed tonight, I think the physical and emotional week has got to me.

DAY THREE AT SOI DOGS

Today has been a better day for me emotionally. I didn’t get as upset when I saw the dogs, instead I moved past the initial heartbreak for a clearer focus on the task at hand.
My mission today was to make sure my dogs all got a nice walk around the lake, free run in the enclosed areas and a paddle in the pool. So lots of small victories.
Lots of 3 legged dogs today, their resilience and zest for life is so heartwarming.

A downpour of rain this afternoon, got very wet on the way home in the open truck we travel in.

DAY TWO AT SOI DOGS

Another emotional day today and my heart is officially full. Just seeing the resilience in these dogs, getting a second chance at life puts everything into perspective.
The hollow look of a street dog who has forgotten what kindness looks like, or the quiet resignation in the eyes of an old street dog who thinks his kennel is a safe place to stay, reluctant to go for a walk or a paddle in the pool.

In my lunch break I spent some time in the puppy pen. 20+ puppies all craving attention, it was lots of fun and if I could, I’d bring them all home.

My walks today were a complete mixture, the energetic happy ones, the quiet old ones and the heartbreaking stillness of the injured and broken.

Another thunderstorm today and slightly cooler, but still very hot.
The photos are of the dogs I walked today.

DAY ONE AT SOI DOGS

Just got back to the hotel after my first day at Soi Dogs. (We are 7 hours in front, so the time is 5.15pm.
Oh my goodness what a completely overwhelming experience. The dogs, so many dogs. We spent the day walking them in turn. It’s all dependent on how many volunteers turn up to walk them, so not all of them get walked that day.

For me, seeing what these dogs have been through in a past life, was so emotional. The healed injures, are so evident, the scars, ears half missing, missing legs and quite a few with no eyes.

Some of the dogs love their 30 minute walk, some are so shut down they can’t cope with leaving their pen, there are excercise areas where they can be lead free, most just walk slowly around, they don’t know how to play ball. There is a large pool which is the fun bit, watching them splash around, but they have very limited time in there, as they have to take turns.

I haven’t taken any Photos today, I think I just needed to get my bearings and adapt myself to all my emotions. I will post pics tomorrow.

Before I sign off today I want to mention the extreme heat, it’s so hot here, I think I may have a little heat stroke (nothing a paracetamol can’t fix). But, as I’m writing this we now have the most dramatic thunderstorm I’ve ever witnessed. The rain, thunder and lightning is insane.

Look out for my short blog tomorrow.
