As people admire fireworks brightening the night sky, countless animals tremble with fright, scrambling for shelter from the deafening blasts. Now, Great Britain may act to shield them from this terrifying experience.

In 2026, the UK Government put forward tighter restrictions on the loudest fireworks, including limiting their use to professional displays. These proposals seek to lessen the harm to animals and communities, but they do not constitute a total ban on fireworks.

Each year, dogs and cats shelter beneath furniture, shake, or attempt to flee the noise. Wild birds may also become frightened and suddenly take flight, exposing themselves to danger as they flee the blasts.

To animals, fireworks are no celebration. Abrupt bangs and bright flashes can trigger genuine fear and distress, particularly among pets and wildlife unable to understand what is unfolding around them.

Tighter controls on fireworks could make celebrations safer for animals. No animal should spend a night in terror simply because people want to celebrate.
