‼️ IMPORTANT - PET TRAVEL ANNOUNCEMENT ‼️
🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾
We need to update you with new guidelines that will likely impact a few of our clients 😔 and a reminder about holidays with pets to the EU. Please share so that as many people as possible are made aware.
If you have an EU Pet Passport (e.g. issued in France, Spain, Ireland, etc) but you live in the UK - you will NOT be able to use it for travel into the EU from 22nd April 2026 due to new EU regulations.
The rule change clearly states EU Pet Passports can now only be used if your primary main residence is within the EU.
Anyone who lives in the UK and wants to travel to the EU with a pet (dog, cat or ferret) will need an Animal Health Certificate (AHC). The rules for these haven't changed (we'll let you know if they do) but as a reminder:
- Your pet must be microchipped (this is a legal requirement for both dogs and cats anyway!)
- Your pet must be vaccinated against Rabies (the vaccine we use must be given at least 21 days before travel and is then valid for 3 years) and the microchip must be checked at your vaccination appointment.
- The AHC must be issued within 10 days of travel by an OV qualified vet (at Alder Vets that's currently Deirdre or Maria )
- It is then valid for a maximum of 4 months but can only used once! This means once you re-enter the UK, you will need another AHC before your pet can travel again
- If you are going to Finland, Ireland, Malta or Norway with a dog - they must be treated for tapeworm with a vet (we need to see them take the treatment, check their microchip, and sign the certificate) within 1-5 days of travel

If you're traveling to Northern Ireland, you used to need an AHC but now you don't. They have their own pet travel scheme where you need to apply for a Pet Travel Document yourself.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email us at [email protected] or call us on 01778 422863
If you require an AHC, please either contact us on 01778 422863 (please do this as early as you can, as we have very limited availability and it's tricky to get these certificates sorted when we have to plan it around consults, results, surgeries, etc!) or contact a suitable pet travel company
