One thing I will be forever grateful to have gained from my journey of becoming a massage therapist is the deeper connection I now have with my own mare, Fairy 🧚🏼
Understanding how her body functions, her strengths and weaknesses, and being able to truly LISTEN to her has helped us come on not just in a ridden sense but also as a partnership. Don’t get me wrong, we have always had a good bond, having had her for 13 years, but it’s only been in the last couple of years I feel we have a true understanding and she will come to me as her safe space and truly allow me in. Being able to treat her is a real blessing, and I’m so lucky that I now have the skills to not only be that safe place for her and understand her body, but apply that to all my clients horses too 🫶🏼

Horses are incredibly good at adapting. They compensate, adjust, and keep working long before they show obvious signs that something feels uncomfortable. That is why bodywork appointments are often about far more than simply “fixing” a problem. They are part of a much bigger picture of supportin...

New tool in the tool kit 🛠️

⚫️ CUPPING ⚫️

Cupping works by creating negative pressure, lifting fascia and connective tissue. This process allows the lymphatic system to clear away waste that has been bought to the surface, allowing space for new fresh blood to flow to the area 〰️

There are many benefits to using cups:
🔺 Pain relief
🔺 Improved blood flow and lymphatic drainage
🔺 Myofascial release helping to break down fascial adhesions and restrictions
🔺 Muscle relaxation and increased range of motion

I love watching the ponies up on the coast path. They are so sure footed across the ground- having to move across different terrains, picking their way through and over rocky trails and outcrops, and climbing up and down the steep cliff edges. Their grazing is how nature intended- foraging on coarse grasses and shrubs. They are constantly on the move, never standing in one place for longer than a minute while grazing before moving on to the next patch. They always look remarkably well (albeit with tangly manes and scruffy tails!) truly thriving off the land 🌿

It does then beg the question of how under exposed our domesticated horses are to their natural habitat and behaviours 🤔 For many horses, their grazing consists of lush green pastures, with little to no ability to forage, browse, and with limited space. We must also think of how our horses eat- for a lot of them they are either grazing off the floor, or eating from a tied hay net. The ponies on the coast are forever changing their posture when grazing- going from picking at ground level, to up high in hedge rows, down low on top of rocks.
And then there’s the landscape of their turnout. Many of us aren’t blessed to have access to rolling hills, changing terrains and that ‘natural habitat’ we all want to create for our horses- certainly not in a turn out capacity. A lot of our turn out looks like square flat land pasture, all on one surface, nothing for our horses to pick their way through or over, so very little proprioceptive stimulation. I would put money on those hill ponies very rarely going lame- their musculoskeletal systems are strong and developed for the purpose of moving across the land how they were intended, no matter the ground conditions. Is the reason our domestic horses so often pick up injury down to their limitations in their day to day life? Are ridden issues down to their lack of proprioceptive awareness due to lack of truly natural terrain and environment?

There are many ways we can incorporate some ‘wild’ into our horses day to day lives, which is vital for their mental wellbeing and physical health and capacity ❤️🦄

Taping for pastern support 💪🏼

This was applied to a mare with ringbone (pastern arthritis), to help support and alleviate any discomfort in the area.

As the tape lifts the skin, it creates more space for blood flow in the underlying tissues, which is vital for transporting oxygen and nutrients around the body to aid healing. It will also help to alleviate pressure on inflammed areas. Both of these are key in relieving the symptoms that come with arthritis.

Some myofascial release through the ribs ⛓️‍💥

When fascia is tight, it becomes a bit like a vacuum pack- restricted, stuck and stiff. If your horse has tight fascia around the ribs, it may show as:
• Difficultly bending
• Struggling to perform lateral movements
• Limited thoracic spine mobility

Using myofascial techniques will help restore the fascia to its healthy state, where it is elastic, smooth, hydrated and functional. The perfect partner to massage 💆🏻‍♀️
