A few photos from today. Frankie continues to improve thank goodness. She's still got a way to go but her breathing is definitely improving. Pip is doing great and will be moving into the shed soon. He came in at 121g and is now 259g. Sadly we lost Adam this afternoon who came in with a severe case of ringworm and internal parasites. Dave was getting up for his meat and very interested in the camera!

Hello . Who has kindly dropped off several bags of bedding and towels into Maz porch pls ?

Whilst we are so happy and grateful for your support, unfortunately we are unable to accept sheets and duvets covers . As you probably know Maz is disabled and unable to move these bags - they may feel light to you but to Maz they aren't. This means someone has to be called to take the sheets and other similar items to the tip or charity shop .

With thanks and respect could you please return and take away the items we can't use . Always use fleeces and towels but not other types of bedding. Thank you so much.

I'm really sorry that I've not managed to post as frequently the last few week! It's absolutely manic here and I've had a few health issues to deal with as well.

The rescue is still full. Every time we manage to get a hedgehog released that space is filled within the day. I've never known it to be so busy this early on in the year - and so many badly injured hogs too. It's heartbreaking seeing the state some of them are when they arrive - but I can only do my best and hope that it's enough.

I can't thank my amazing volunteers enough for all their help and hard work. The amount of mess they clean up every day is astounding sometimes. How animals so small can poo so much is beyond me!!

In critical care at the moment I have Ochre and Pip who are both doing OK. Pip came in at 121g and is now 215g and is eating and drinking independently. Ochre is sloely improving. He came in from the golf club if you remember. His legs are still very sore but they are healing.

In the main shed we currently have:

Dave, Harold, Bob, Frankie, Milly, Robbie, Mabel, Walter, Heidi, Foxy and Joseph. There are many others out with our amazing foster team and some with Maz in the enclosed garden preparing for release.

A reminder if you want to follow the progress of a hedgehog you can do so on the rescuecentre.org.uk website. If you message for the CRN and password for a hog I can give those to you and you can log in for updates. I'm sorry I'm not able to update everyone by text as I just don't have the time. I do reply when I can but you will find it easier just to be able to log in and check I'm sure!!

I promise to try and update and share things a bit more now at least the health issues are easing. As ever, thank you to all who support The Hoggery, we couldn't do it without you.
Anyone who feels able to donate to help us all the details are in the pinned post at the top of the page.

Following on from my post about the poor hog that had to be put to sleep - a case in point - the next day this one arrives. Those spines on his head are a textbook strimmer injury. A couple of millimetres lower and he would have lost the top of his head. And we've seen that more than once.
This guy is called Ochre and he has awful injuries to both back feet and legs and is in a lot of pain. Hopefully they will heal. But he shouldn't be going through this. He was found at Hart Common Golf Club - that's not to say the injury happened there but I doubt he could have walked far in this state.

CHECK BEFORE YOU STRIM! Hart Common Golf Club - do your gardeners check before they use equipment that can injure wildlife?

Just a little note to people following a hedgehog's progress on the website - please don't worry too much if you see weight loss as this hot weather kicks in. This is totally normal and nothing to worry about. Please know that I'm watching everyone very closely.

I admit I've been putting off posting about this beautiful girl who came in yesterday. Partly because it's heartbreaking to have to look at her photo and imagine what she went through and partly because I don't know what else I can say that I haven't said a thousand times before.

I used to think that gardeners were a group of people who loved and respected nature and worked with it to make it the best it can be. I still want to think that - but it's almost impossible when humans on the end of garden equipment continue to cause injuries like this to innocent wild animals. The worst thing is that it can be easily avoided - they just need to LOOK before hacking away at long grass or under trees and bushes. A gentle scrape through grass with a rake will easily alert you if there is a hog or a nest.

This photo is the result of not doing. I can't say if this was caused by a strimmer, a garden fork or shovel but whatever it was it ripped this beautiful girls face half off. Including her eye. She was found a day or so later lying in a garden. She was still alive and in agony. The lady that dropped her off with me rushed her over as soon as she found her and was in tears as she left. All i could do was give immediate pain relief and get her to our vet to end her pain. She wasn't an old hog but a young female who should have had the rest of her life ahead of her. She may have been pregnant, I don't know. The smell of infection was so very strong.

I am seriously considering putting together a group of gardening services who will take a pledge to check for hedgehogs before working in their habitat. That way people will be able to know that they are using a company that are diligent and respectful enough to check for any wildlife and take precautions to avoid any further injuries like this. What do you think? Would it work? I don't know, it's just an idea at the moment, but something needs to be done. Dealing with injuries like this is just horrible.
