This time of year is often our most busiest with maintenance and pond cleaning. We bounce from one job to the next and often don’t have time to reflect on what we have achieved. We received this review yesterday from a lovely gentleman whose pond we cleaned this week. Thank you Bill, I’m glad you can now enjoy your pond.

This rill was leaking from the start and the original builder refused to come out and fix it. On inspection the blocks had cracks in, they were laid on edge and on a concrete foundation around 1-2 inches thick. The coping stones as you can see were laid on dirt and had minimal mortar, not surprisingly it failed. We completely demolished the rill and started from scratch. We even come in cheaper than the original builder.

This pond builder had apparently showed at the Chelsea Flower Show, remember people, the designs on show at Chelsea only need to last two weeks.

This week we have been renovating a couple of ponds in our local infant school. These were in quite a state as the liners we’re badly torn and leaking. This one is to be used for wildlife conservation and education. Within 2 days of finishing this pond we found a smooth newt and as the saying goes “built it and they will come”

Here is a perfect example of how not to build a pond or carryout any landscaping. The pond coping stones were laid on soil and not on a full bed of mortar. The concrete base was around 2 inch’s thick and in some places as low as 1 inch. Not surprisingly, this failed too. The original pond builder proved difficult to deal with so unfortunately our client is having to take legal action. Just remember everyone, if someone states they have shown at the Chelsea Flower show, their build only needs to last for two weeks! We will be dismantling this rill and rebuilding so watch this space.

This week we are refurbishing the ponds at Nyewood C of E Infant School in Bognor Regis. Both ponds liners were in a terrible state so they needed to be replaced and ponds rebuilt. The wildlife pond has been emptied and new liners installed, we used an fleece underlay, 0.75mm rubber liner and another fleece overlay to protect the liner.
We have started landscaping the pond with Cotswold rocks, pebbles and gravel and will be planting out with a mixture of native marginal aquatic plants this week.

Another pond cleaned today, this one was suffering from duck w**d and poorly maintained pump and filter. The pond was drained and cleaned, the pump fixed and a new OASE UK biopress filter installed. The waterfall was leaking on one edge so we repaired it using Oase Foamfix. Glad to say the client is over the moon and looking forward to having coffee by the pond in the morning.
