Loose lead isnt natural. It’s a skill that has to be learnt. Biomechanically, dogs are built to move faster than us. Dogs choose to shift to a natural trot and on average walk at 2.5 - 4 mph (Hildebrand, 1966) where us naked monkeys on the otherhand average 2-3 mph walking (Kirtley, 2006). Do you know what 2.5 feels like? You should!

Because the mismatch alone creates tension — physically with the lead and emotionally in the relationship. Infact Dogs Trust found 30% of owners considered it a reason to rehome.

Now add in breed differences with research by Fischer & Lilje (2011) suggesting that Different breeds have different locomotive profiles based on original function. Malinois and Vizslas who are bred to move, track, cover ground; hearding breed like kelpies and collies who are bred to arc out infront; scent hounds like Beagles and Bloodhounds - designed to follow their noses with purpose, drive and speed; and of course breeds like Huskies who are literally bred and built to pull - it’s in the actual job description.

Its not a suprise that Rooney & Cowan (2011) found Lead tension and restricted gait was specifically a negative welfare marker for working breeds.

So when we expect all dogs to plod beside us through a park at human pace, ignoring smells, distractions, and natural instinct…we’re arent asking for a behaviour: We’re asking for the dog to restrain their pace, suppress their instincts, and constantly self-regulate.

In my opinion loose lead is one of the three essential skills I believe every dog pro needs to understand in depth - gait, drive, motivation, mechanics, assessment, different technique and exercise, consequence gradients and all.

Because when you understand what you’re really asking for,
you stop calling it stubbornness
and start training it like the advanced skill it actually is. And this leads to way better pet dogs with way happier relationships. ###

Yesterday was a lot of fun as we tested our skills in our first Level 2 Scentwork UK trial at Sussex County Dog Training. It was only Stella’s fourth-ever trial, and at over 10 years old, she made me incredibly proud. As a trainer, I also enjoyed having been involved in the training of two of the dogs that ultimately finished 1st & 4th.
A big thank you to all those involved in organising and facilitating an excellent event. Also congratulations to all the other dogs and their handlers.

It is important to always consider the environment and context when dealing with behavioural challenges with our dogs. Often, the focus is on the behaviour our dogs are displaying and what the handler doesn’t want. Instead of solely looking at what the behaviour is, it’s more helpful to explore what is contributing to that behaviour overall.

This picture of Stella and Jack was taken while we were away in our motorhome. At home, Stella often moves off the sofa if Jack gets on next to her. She would never join him on the same sofa that he’s already on. However, in this picture, she decided of her own free will to join Jack on the same sofa. There was another sofa free on the other side, which she was on prior to moving, so it was definitely her making a choice. She later stretched out, and Jack decided to also stretch out and rest his head on her. If she had been at home, she wouldn’t tolerate this and would probably moan and move off the sofa.

This example highlights that dogs are making choices based on their comfort, environment, and current state, rather than simply reacting reflexively. When working on behavioural modification or general training, always consider the environment and context. Ask yourself:

Does my dog display this behaviour everywhere, in every setting?
Are there specific triggers or situations that influence this behaviour?
How does the environment (location, other animals, people, routines) impact my dog’s reactions?
Is the environment supporting or hindering the behaviour I want to see?

Key Points:
Dogs’ behaviours are often context-dependent; understanding this helps in addressing issues effectively.
Observing your dog across different environments provides insight into their true preferences and comfort levels.
Modifying the environment can be a powerful tool in behavioural training.
Always ask yourself if the behaviour is consistent across settings or specific to certain situations.
Patience and observation are essential for developing effective and compassionate training strategies.

By keeping these points in mind, you can better understand your dog's behaviour and create a supportive environment that encourages positive change.
