Our guests had great fun using their noses to hunt for hidden treats in the ball pit. To us, this isn't just a game – it's an important form of enrichment that allows dogs to use one of their strongest natural instincts.

Different Breeds. Different Instincts. Different Needs. Same Love & Understanding...

One of the things I love most about caring for dogs is learning about what makes breeds unique.

Dogs weren't all bred for the same purpose. Border Collies were bred to herd, Terriers to hunt and chase vermin, Retrievers to carry game gently, Sighthounds to sprint and pursue prey, and Livestock Guardian breeds to protect. These instincts are still very much part of who they are today, even if they're now beloved pets.

That's why I don't believe in a "one size fits all" approach to dog care.

A busy Spaniel may need lots of sniffing opportunities and mental enrichment, while a Greyhound may be perfectly happy with a short burst of exercise followed by a long nap. A Terrier may enjoy problem-solving games or hunting, while a nervous rescue dog may simply need patience, space and understanding.

When dogs come to stay with us, I take time to get to know them as individuals. I look at their breed traits, personality, age, history and what makes them feel safe, happy and fulfilled. My aim is always to meet their needs as closely as possible, rather than expecting every dog to fit into the same routine.

The more we understand why dogs behave the way they do, the better we can support them. It's one of the reasons I'm always learning about different breeds and their natural instincts. Every dog has something to teach us.

After all, our dogs aren't just pets – they're unique individuals with thousands of years of breeding, instinct and personality wrapped up in one wonderful package. ❤️🐾

🐾 A Big Day for a Little Puppy 🐾

Today we welcomed this gorgeous little chap for his first stay with us. ❤️

Like many puppies experiencing a new environment, new people and new smells, he arrived feeling a little unsure and cautious. It's completely normal – the world can feel like a very big place when you're still so young.

Rather than expecting every dog to jump straight in, I always try to work at their pace. Building trust, allowing them time to observe, explore and process their surroundings is so important, especially for puppies.

I'm pleased to say that after a little time, patience and reassurance, his confidence began to grow and he had a really lovely day. Watching a nervous pup start to relax, investigate their surroundings and show their personality is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

Every dog is different. Some arrive ready to take on the world, while others need a little more support. My job is to recognise what each individual dog needs and help them feel safe, secure and happy during their stay.

I'd say this handsome little man did brilliantly today. We can't wait to watch his confidence continue to blossom. 🐾💙

🌟 Our girl Ada, our everything 🌟

As many of you know, our resident dog was rescued from Croatia and, while she's come such a long way & can still be a little unsure of the world (big sticks, bangs, spray bottles, runners...the list goes on). Watching her journey has been incredible. Through patience, training, understanding, and lots of love, she's grown in confidence and continues to amaze us every day.

One thing that makes us especially proud is how well she accepts and adapts to the many guest dogs who come through our doors. She shares her home, her space, and often her humans too, with remarkable tolerance and kindness.

Today is actually her only day as the sole dog in the household until sometime in September! We are incredibly grateful to have such a busy diary, and that is all thanks to the trust our wonderful clients place in us.

As dog owners ourselves, we understand completely how precious our dogs are. They aren't "just pets"—they're family members, best friends, confidants, and often the centre of our world. Our own girl certainly is ours. ❤️

Thank you to every family who entrusts us with the care of their beloved dogs. We never take that responsibility for granted, and we feel privileged to be part of their lives, even if only for a short stay.

Here's to a summer filled with wagging tails, new friendships, and plenty of adventures at Braintree Canine Retreat. 🐾❤️
