Yes, it is still only May but I was saddened today to see the number of dogs being dragged along on lead, clearly too hot and desperately thirsty. How many of those owners could just have waited till this evening, when it's cooler or, at the very least, carried a collapsible bowl and insulated bottle of cool water?

A little insight into what the Instructor's dogs get up to at the weekends. This was LeoFest in Driffield, a fun weekend where Elsa and Laura did a carting demonstration.

Now that spring is finally here, your dog is at an increased risk of adder bites.

The adder (Vipera berus berus) is the only venomous snake native to the UK and is a protected species. Adders are most commonly, but not exclusively, found on dry, sandy heaths, sand dunes, rocky hillsides, moorlands and woodland edges. The clinical signs of an adder bite can include rapid and progressive swelling around the bite site, pain, lethargy, vomiting, bruising, bleeding and collapse.

What should you do if your pet has been bitten by an adder?
❌Do not panic.
❌Do not interfere with the bite.
❌Do not apply a tourniquet.
❌Do not attempt to touch or catch the snake.
❌Do not kill the snake – it is a protected species.
❌If practical, carry your dog to your car and go to your veterinary surgeon - do not delay seeking advice even if your pet is well as things can change quickly.

Adders are not aggressive and generally only bite when provoked. They hibernate in the winter and as a result most bites occur in the summer. Pets are frequently bitten on the leg, head or neck. If your pet has been bitten by an adder (even if you did not see the snake or are not sure what happened) – contact your vet immediately. Your vet will examine your pet to determine the location of the bite and extent of the swelling.

Waggy Tails are very proud of Instructor Laura Mandelson and her Leonberger, Eve. They are down to the last four dogs auditioning for a part in the musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the King's Theatre. Today, we took her along to meet the director and the actor who will be with her on stage. She had to show friendliness, obedience, calmness and a connection with the actor. Here is Eve with the actor playing Caractacus Potts. They loved each other so keep your fingers (and paws) crossed she is chosen for the part. We find out in a week or so.

The National Pet Awards has passed and, although we didn't win our category, we had a great night and felt so honoured and grateful to even be there. It is still amazing that our friendly little club was there at all. The following are some of the photos taken from the night. Thank you again to everyone who thought we were worth nominating and voting for. We appreciate you all.

Tomorrow night is the big night! The night when the Instructors climb out of their green uniforms and into something a bit more glamorous. To be honest, we probably all feel more comfortable in our uniforms than a dress! Yes, it's the annual National Pet Awards ceremony and we are very excited.
We will be up against larger, more "professional" clubs, many of whom are run as a business. This means our small, not-for-profit club run by volunteers hasn't a hope of winning. The truth is that we don't care as we feel we have already won by being nominated again. It is only because of our amazing members that we're still here, doing what we love, so we want to thank each and every one of you for your continued support. The fact that the dogs who come demonstrate why we are called "Waggy Tails" is what really makes us proud but we are delighted to be nominated for this award so thank you for making it possible.

14/04/2026

There will be a new Puppy Training and Socialization course starting soon.
Announcement of dates and times to follow. We only have two spaces left, despite not advertising so get in touch if you're interested.
