🐑 Dorset County Show Time! 🐄

We are looking forward to supporting this weekend in the “Fabulous Food and Farming” area.

We have loads of free family fun for kids of all ages to enjoy, even the adult ones!

We love being part of the local farming community and are looking forward to demonstrating and teaching some of the skills needed to look after farm animals.

Not long now until our second “Tackling TB in Dorset” meeting. We will focus on the role that deer can play in the spread of TB, as well as practical steps that can be taken to identify, manage and reduce these risks.

🐑 Melplash show 2026 🐑

It was great to pop along to Melplash Show 🐑🐄🐖🐐 today and enjoy the buzz of a brilliant, local, agricultural event!

It was especially lovely to catch up with lots of our farmers and see them doing so well in their stock classes. We know how much work goes into prepping for such events and full credit absolutely goes to them.

We have been overwhelmed by the support shown from several families who show stock and after a couple suggested the branded boards, many have kindly offered to display them. We are proud to be associated with such great farmers and their smart animals! So thank you all!

We take pride in being able to play our role in helping keep your animals healthy and well. But, at the risk of sounding too cringy…what we also love is the community we are building. It really does feel like the support is mutual. We are focused on maintaining the traditional way of vetting, delivering a personalised service, which is built on these supportive relationships.

☀️ Preparing for the summers ahead ☀️

This summer’s unprecedented weather has certainly challenged livestock and farming systems. While heat stress may be fresh in our minds, now is the perfect time to look back at what we have learnt and, importantly, look ahead to how we can better prepare for hotter summers in the future.

Join us for an interactive meeting and farm walk exploring practical ways to reduce the impact of heat stress on dairy and beef cattle, from housing and ventilation to management strategies that can help protect feed intake, milk yield, fertility, immunity, health and productivity.

We are delighted to be joined by experienced speakers Paul Bartholomew from Bart Agri - Paul Bartholomew and Rupert Shepherd from Shropshire Farm Vets , alongside our own vet Charlotte Fowler, who will share practical experience and advice from both veterinary and on-farm perspectives. Including UK systems and lessons learned from large dairy enterprises in the Middle East.

Did you see this month’s edition of Dorset Life ? Our vet Charlotte featured, sharing her expertise on recognising and managing heat stress.

Since going to print, temperatures have thankfully started to reduce from where they were earlier in the month, but we are still seeing signs of heat stress, especially when humidity has remained high. There is also, of course, the knock-on, longer term impact on conception rates and growth rates that we are still identifying. So, we are continuing the conversation on farm as we navigate what has been a challenging summer!

⭐️TB Meeting⭐️

In our bid to support the fight against TB we are hosting the second of our “Tackling TB in Dorset” meetings. For this one we will focus on what can be done to monitor and control TB in the local wildlife population.

Deer management is a key part of this and we have invited Phil House from Dorset Deer Management along to share his expertise. We will hear about his work, how TB can be identified in deer, and what to do when it is found.

Further presentations will follow, including a panel discussion with Alice Miller, Felicity Southam, Sam Ecroyd and Kit Heawood.

This meeting, on Tuesday 8th September is open to all local farmers as well as those involved with deer management. We would like to encourage a collaborative approach to monitoring and reporting TB in the local wildlife population and plan to look at how this can help control TB spread to cattle.

We had a great day yesterday and are looking forward to today Gillingham & Shaftesbury Show .

We are at stand B121 and welcome you and your family along! We have plenty of fun activities for the kids and are happy to answer any questions you may have about Homefield Farm Vets and what support and services we offer to local farmers.

It was great to catch up with so many people yesterday, as well as meeting a lot of new people too. If you are at the show today please do pop in for tasty refreshments, the kettle is always on unless you fancy a nice cold cider or beer instead! 🍻🍦🍰☕️🍬

We are excited to be at Gillingham & Shaftesbury Show Wednesday and Thursday!

You can find us on our stand B121, we would love to welcome our clients and have a catch-up and chat to anyone who would like to find out more about what Homefield Farm Vets has to offer.

A huge thank you to our clients at BuckridgeDairy . Kate Buckler and Ed Mogridge have kindly provided their delicious handmade-on-farm ice cream for our visitors, made using fresh milk from their own cows.

We are also delighted to be collaborating with our extended team member Alex Williams, Alex Williams who we work closely with on cattle lameness and sheep and goat pregnancy scanning.

With all the delicious treats on offer and plenty to keep both kids and adults entertained, including our animal hoppers, farm safety charity campaign and “Spin the Wheel” prize draw, we hope it is worth a visit!

There is still time to sign up to our FREE, OPEN meeting The Fox Inn Ansty this Thursday at 7pm.

We are now experiencing a rise in suspected clinical cases in Dorset and this is predicted to continue. In light of this we want to offer as much support as we can to local livestock keepers, so invite everyone along to our information sharing event.

Alice Miller will be opening and chairing the evening, starting with an update on the current situation in Dorset and what we are doing to support clients. We are grateful to be joined by both Jonathan Hobbs, North Park Vets and Fi Boothby, The Vale Veterinary Group, at this busy time. They are both directors of their practices in Devon, where their clients have been heavily hit with Bluetongue. They will be sharing their recent and ongoing experiences. Becca Cavill, vet at Boehringer Ingelheim will be presenting wider research on Bluetongue, as well as an industry update including news on the vaccination supply chain challenges.

⭐️Welcome to the team, Sarah!⭐️

We are really excited to welcome Sarah Eckett to the Homefield Farm Vets team!

Sarah brings a fantastic combination of farming experience, veterinary practice management and industry knowledge.

Having grown up on a beef and sheep farm, Sarah has always had a passion for livestock. She went on to study at Hartpury Agricultural College, where she met her husband, before working on dairy farms, milking cows and later working for the Dorset Dairy Company, giving her a wealth of hands-on experience within the farming industry.

Family and farming have always gone hand in hand for Sarah. She has kept sheep for many years and has her own pedigree Lleyn flock, enjoying both showing and judging the breed. Her passion for sheep has also been passed down through the generations, with her two children and now three grandchildren taking an interest in farming and getting involved with the flock.

Sarah previously spent 18 years in a local farm animal veterinary practice, where she was practice manager, giving her a wealth of experience in business operations and supporting farmers. She also brings valuable experience in medicine purchasing and negotiating with suppliers, further strengthening and enhancing this core part of the business as we continue to secure competitive pricing and the best possible service for our clients.

We are delighted to have Sarah on board and are sure many of you will get to know her very quickly if you don’t already. We are lucky to welcome another fantastic addition to our experienced, friendly and farmer-focused team!
