We’ve been quiet on here recently, and for good reason. A puppy arrived into my life!

Those of you who know me know that we’ve always had rescues. An opportunity arrived to have one of my good friends litter of Tollers. A breed that I thought would slot nicely into our adventurous lifestyle and hopefully mix well with Tui. I haven’t had a puppy for years and was excited to have that experience. I was lucky enough to help him be delivered and spend time with him every week until he moved in with us (thanks Joan 🥰).

As many of you know Tui is dog ‘reactive’ and therefore we made a promise to Tui (and Mac) that if this caused stress to her and compromised welfare to either of them, then he would go back to Joan to find a good home (hence why I didn’t want to announce his arrival).

4 months on, he’s now 6 months old, and he’s staying 💚We’ve been doing a very slow, careful and considered introduction with Tui, which is still on-going, but so far so good. I’ll share that journey separately.

For now here’s some memories of Macdui’s first 6 months, he’s named after the highest mountain in the Cairngorms, that we hope to climb together one day.

I’ve been focussing on general puppy rearing, socialising and trying to stay sane while I teach him life skills. I forgot how hard puppies can be 🤯, and now we’re heading into adolescence… let the fun commence 😂

It’s been a long time coming but finally my MSc paper is published! Blood sweat and tears went into this. Fair to say it will be my first and last published scientific journal article 🤓🤯 🦮

Positive reinforcement training (PRT) is an effective and humane training technique for modifying animals’ behavior. Given the influence of assistance…

Enjoyed working with Future CPD on this webinar. Great that money was raised for Dogs Trust 💛 🐾

On Monday, Clinical Animal Behaviourist Emily Harvey joined us for a CPD session exploring separation-related behaviours in dogs, dispelling some of the myths and misconceptions around this important topic, before discussing treatment strategies.

We'd like to say a massive thank you to Emily and Dogs Trust, who very kindly provided this session. We are delighted that so far we have managed to raise over £450 in donations for them - could you help us towards our £1,000 target by making a small donation too? 👇

If you couldn't make it to the live event, don't worry as the recording has now been uploaded to the FutureCPD members area. Simply log in here and you will be redirected to the recording! 🎥

Beginning station training. These sheep are all over 10 years old but still quick to learn.

Vet visit 🐐 💉

Super proud of the boys with their recent annual vet visit. Stationing during all the procedures and checks.

The best bit (which I didn’t get on camera) was the vet saying “all their heart rates are really relaxed, they must be used to being handled” - yay to the power of positive reinforcement ❤️

All the vets we’ve had from Kidd Veterinary Centre have been amazing, super open to using cooperative care/restraint free handling. Even wanting to reinforce the goats themselves.

Full disclosure the Pygmies needed a bit more management but were happily eating while being on lead, and being mildly restrained. We haven’t had these guys as long so it’s something to work on for next year 🤞. Will need some people to help play vet…. Any takers? 😜

Earlier this week we had some friends around to help us with group walking the goats.

Great enrichment for both goats and people. Lots of hilarity 😂🐐❤️

Really enjoyed doing this session with an amazing group of people!

🐐 Consistency with stationing 🐐

I know I bang on about stationing a lot, but it’s such a useful foundation behaviour that can be used in so many contexts and help solve so many issues, especially with groups of animals.

We station the goats consistently when coming in and out of their field, it’s now formed a habit. May not look like a spectacular trick but it prevents head butting, escapees, prevents fighting over resources and it also protects us!

This is a short clip that a friend captured when they came over. It’s of me entering the paddock and what we do daily to maintain the behaviour. They all have their own locations and automatically station for anyone who enters (even the dog! 🐶)

Slightly out my comfort zone, knackered from the adrenaline of learning a new skill! But great support and laughs with Future CPD and Trimble Productions. 💛💛🐶🐾

Talking about my favourite subject tonight 🤓

Thanks to all my colleagues and friends who provided such great videos and case studies for the talk ❤️

The British Veterinary Behaviour Association (BVBA) have their last webinar of the year on tonight. It is recorded so even if you cannot make it live, do register for the recording.

This webinar will be incredibly important for all professionals working with animals & for all owners/caregivers because it is about cooperative care, which means, being able to do things to an animal, like a veterinary clinical exam, but with their consent/because we’ve taught them to enjoy it!

Speaker: Emily Harvey

Time: 7pm UK time ONLINE

Title: It Takes Two: the science, welfare, and application of cooperative care
