Today was my first day opening my independent reptile rescue. Today was also the day I will have seen the worst case of reptile neglect I will likely ever see in my life. My first official rescue.
Believe it or not, this snake is alive. It is believed this snake may have gone without food from anywhere from 18 months, to 2 whole years. This snake likely hasn’t seen water for 3-4 months. With every bone showing in her body, as well as her top half being completely sunken in, her body most likely began to produce fatty deposits on her head in an attempt to keep herself alive. These photos were taken in the tub I used to bring her home, and as I write this post I am running her a warm bath to bathe her in to at least provide a shred of comfort- something that is a requirement, not a privilege for any pet. She will hopefully be seen by a vet tomorrow where she will receive the best care she possibly can, however all avenues will be explored before thinking of euthanasia. The unfortunate truth is that this will likely be the worst case I will ever come across during my time being a rescue from here on. And this was the first animal I picked up. I loaded her into the car and burst into tears.
If this animal were to recover, it would take her a LONG time to look like a normal python.
If there is one thing I can ask, please, PLEASE surrender your animal before they get to this point. The pain and suffering this animal is experiencing at the hand of somebody that was supposed to love and nurture her like any pet should be is unimaginable. I only launched this service today. But this is the exact reason why I launched this rescue. This is the most heartbreaking neglect I’ve seen in any animal with my own eyes.
Reptiles deserve loving homes too, just like dogs and cats. They don’t deserve any less than what they need to survive.
