The time I nearly drowned for 10 shillings!

When I was a child, my aunt bet me 10 shillings that I couldn’t learn to swim by the end of the holiday. By the last day, I still couldn’t, but when we were on the way home I spotted a river. Perhaps it was one of the first times I thought to myself “Screw it, let’s do it” (although possibly in a more PG friendly tone). Before anyone could change their mind, I ran down the bank and jumped in.

The current was much stronger than I expected. I remember feeling like I was stuck inside a washing machine and I started to panic.

I began thinking I’d made a big mistake, when the current eased up a bit. I slowed down, took a deep breathe, and found a bit of rhythm to my thrashing.

Somehow, I made it across. Cold, muddy, stung by nettles, but full of pride (and 10 shillings in the piggy bank!)
