One of the first things we look at when a dog is displaying behavioural concerns is whether pain could be playing a role.

At Lancashire Canine Academy, we won’t start working on behavioural issues until a dog has been checked by a vet and given the all clear. That’s because pain can have a huge impact on behaviour.

Think about it. When you’re in pain, you’re often less patient, more irritable, quicker to react, and generally not feeling your best. I know I certainly am. It’s hard to be calm, focused and tolerant when you’re hurting.

Dogs are no different.

A dog that suddenly starts growling, snapping, avoiding handling, becoming reactive around other dogs, struggling to settle, or showing changes in behaviour may not be being “naughty” at all. They may be uncomfortable, sore, or experiencing an underlying medical issue.

Training and behaviour modification are important, but they should never be used to mask a problem that needs medical attention.

Rule out pain first. Then we can make sure we’re helping the dog in the right way.

Behaviour is communication. Sometimes what a dog is trying to tell us is, “I hurt.”
