Do you find that your dog misbehaves more during the weekend?

⬇️This could be why ⬇️

For most people, the weekends are a lot busier. Maybe you’re in and out of the house. Do you have guests over? Or maybe loud music or movies on?
For most dogs, a combination a lots of seemingly small things can build up which creates difficult emotions for the dog to deal with. This is when we usually see an outburst or behaviour which we label ‘naughty’.

Remember, dogs are always communicating through their behaviour and actions. So what behaviours do you see in your dog, and what might they be trying to tell you?

I’m sure everyone knows by now the importance of sniffing on walks but I’m here to give you another reason why I like taking steady walks with my dog and the dogs I work with.

My main reason is simply to enjoy my time with the dog I’m with. Often, a walk will be the highlight of their day, so if they want to sniff a tree for 5 minutes, I try my best to stay patient and give them the time they need to do what makes them happy.

I do enjoy going for a fast paced walk, but I also know that’s not always possible with my sniffy daxie. Accepting that whilst also shifting my view to see the walk as his time, has been a game changer for me!

What are walks with your dog usually like? Super speedy or slow and sniffy?

A lot of the time we label our dogs as stubborn when they don’t follow through straight away with a behaviour.

Usually, rather than being stubborn through spite, the dog is feeling something else which causes hesitation rather than stubbornness.

As you can see in this video, Elfo is was showing a few behavioural signs that tell us he’s a bit unsure, such as whale eye (showing the whites of his eyes), licking his lips and lifting his paw. Therefore, this tells us that initially he was hesitant to follow through with the behaviour because he felt uneasy.

⭐️ Overall message - stubbornness in dogs is most likely caused by an underlying emotion!

Teaching our pups to ignore distractions whilst they are young is something I’d recommend to every puppy owner.

⭐️Puppyhood is the best time to do it, and here why…

Adolescent dogs naturally become more inquisitive and have a stronger need to explore due to their hormones shifting. Therefore, trying to teach our dog to ignore distractions at this stage of their life will likely feel near impossible because we’re fighting against all their natural instincts!
Setting the foundations of training whilst they’re young will ensure your dog has a strong understanding of the training before they reach adolescence!

👀 What’s your dogs biggest distraction?

Our dogs are communicating with us all the time, which is why it’s so important to learn HOW they communicate. Often times I will get called in to help when a dog starts snapping or growling at their owners, which isn’t a sign of a naughty dog, just a dog trying their best to communicate in anyway that is effective.

Learning the early signs of stress and discomfort will help you build a stronger relationship and understanding with your dog!

I feel like the Angus Westie duo need a shout out for filling up half of the video 😅🤍

We’ve had another great week with all the pups! Although we got soaked through most days, we still managed to have a fun week 😝

I know Monday’s can be a bit dull and miserable sometimes, but I like to reflect on my highlight of last week, and hope that this week will bring lots of new highlights. My highlight last week was either my walkies on Saturday where we saw some cows, or honestly just relaxing with Kiku (seen in the last clip) and having a cozy weekend!

Share some positivity and let me know what your highlight was last week? ⭐️
