🚨 WORM ALERT: Haemonchus contortus 🚨

We have recently seen some severe cases of Haemonchus contortus, a blood-sucking roundworm that can cause rapid, fatal anaemia in sheep. Heavy infections may cause sudden death, bottle jaw, or poor growth in lambs and ewes which can look similar to a fluke infection.

⚠️ A single female can lay up to 15,000 eggs per day, with a short 20-day lifecycle. This means numbers can explode quickly, especially in warm, wet weather.

Regular worm egg counts (WECs) are essential to monitor infection levels and respond before it’s too late. Don’t wait for clinical signs — protect your flock by testing and targeted treatment.

⚠️*Bluetongue Virus Update*⚠️

➡️ *ENGLAND* from 1st July - the whole of England will be within a restricted zone. Therefore no testing is required within England.

➡️⚠️ *WALES* policy from *1st July*:

❗Stock moving from England to Wales will require pre-movement testing at the owners expense.
❗Stock going from England to an *abattoir or cull market* in Wales will no require testing

We appreciate that this is going to have significant consequences on trade and sales, and the policy at market and national level will undoubtedly be under regular review.

➡️ Bluetongue virus is an emerging threat to our livestock coming into the main risk period from July to October.

➡️ Vaccination is strongly recommended to help protect stock against disease.

Meet May!!

Some of you will have already met May as she has been with us since September last year joining the team of Vets at the practice.

May comes from the South East of the country and graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2024.

May has an interest in small animal surgery and is enjoying being out on farm. Outside of work May is a keen runner and will sometimes be seen in The Six Bells enjoying a pint after work.

"Filly foal born yesterday morning to Rookhills Miss Valentine , Sire Cumeragh House Upton Silver , absolutely thrilled with her ❤️. A big thank you to Jess the vet with us from day one 😃"

Vet Jess has been involved with this foal from the day of AI, all the way through to yesterday when Jess went to check the foal over and take a quick blood sample to make sure the colostrum had provided enough immune protection.

So rewarding to be a part of this especially in the Shire breed which is on the RBST rare breed list.
