APHA: In response to the significant increase of findings of avian influenza in kept and wild birds, from 00:01 on Sun 16 Feb, mandatory housing measures to protect poultry & captive birds will be extended to Cheshire, Herefordshire, Lancashire, Merseyside and Worcestershire. All bird keepers in these areas must, from this date, house their birds in addition to following stringent biosecurity measures. APHA ALERT UK SAT 25TH DEC 2025

In response to the increase in cases across England and new findings in wild birds, an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) with mandatory biosecurity measures is being put in place and will come into force across all of England and Scotland from noon on Saturday 25 January 2025.

In addition, the regional Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) with mandatory housing and biosecurity measures is being extended to include the unitary authorities of North Yorkshire and York and a new area covering Shropshire from 00:01 on Monday 27 January.

The new AIPZ with mandatory housing and biosecurity measures will then cover:

North Yorkshire (added)
York (added)
Shropshire (added)
The East Riding of Yorkshire
The City of Kingston upon Hull
Lincolnshire
Norfolk
Suffolk.

All bird keepers in these areas must keep their birds housed to protect them from bird flu. This applies to pet birds, commercial flocks and just a few birds in a backyard flock.

All bird keepers should remain vigilant and follow these housing and stringent biosecurity measures, in addition to following any Protection/Surveillance Zone restrictions in their area, to prevent future outbreaks.

Check the avian influenza interactive map to see where restrictions are in place.
