The season is upon us for baby birds to be born, and we have seen a rise in people bringing them into us when found on the ground.
🐥Please do not bring Fledglings into the clinic unless in immediate, unavoidable danger
🐥Fledglings leave the nest intentionally before they can fly perfectly. They will spend a few days on the ground, hopping and hiding in bushes to build their wing strength.
🐥Parent birds monitor their fledglings and swoop down to feed them. If you move the bird, the parents will return to that spot and will not be able to find their offspring.
🐥Keeping a baby bird indoors can be fatal. Fledglings have specific dietary needs, and human interaction may cause deadly stress.
What should you do instead?
🐥 The best you can offer is to contain your pets (like cats and dogs), and if the fledgling is in danger, gently move it in a nearby sheltered spot like a hedge or low branch as close as you can to where it was found.
🐥The fledglings best chance of survival, is to leave it where you find it and let the parents continue to feed and monitor it. Bringing them into the clinic only causes them intense stress and more often than not, they don't end up surviving.
