👉Just because your dog is moving doesn’t mean they’re searching…

Friday’s sessions at PPK Paintball Park were all about quality training and paying attention to what the dogs were telling us.

This isn’t an easy venue but that’s exactly why I love it.

With distractions around every corner and search areas that don’t always fit neatly into a plan, it challenges both dogs and handlers to think.

Every search was tailored to the dog in front of us! For some, that meant building confidence. For others, it was about commitment to the search, exposure to novel environments, or helping handlers develop a better search strategy.

One thing we spent time on was simply standing back and observing.

Learning when your dog is genuinely working odour… and when they’re just having a good old mooch 😅

One of the most common things I see is handlers calling dogs away just as they’re starting to work scent. The only way we get better at recognising those moments is by watching, learning, and trusting what our dogs are telling us.

The dogs had some lovely successes, worked through challenges, and gained experience that will help them on future searches.

That’s what good training looks like to me anyway… •Confidence •Understanding •Experience - Not quick wins!

🐾 Space’s Available Tomorrow – Scent Detection Kidderminster 🐾

Additional spaces have been added on tomorrow’s Scent Detection Workshop in Kidderminster.

This venue is one of my favourites because it can be whatever the team in front of me needs it to be. For some, it’s a place to build confidence, learn new skills and grow understanding. For others, it’s an opportunity to test training, problem-solve and see where the next challenge lies.

Whether you’re looking to strengthen foundations or put your training to the test environmentally, there’s always something to take away.

Monday’s scent detection session in Shustoke was all about exploring thresholds and understanding what each dog can confidently detect.

We worked with gun oil and Kong, looking at how changes in quantity can affect performance.

Kong is quite easy to quantify because you can physically see what you’re working with. Gun oil, for me, is a bit trickier. That’s why I like to test thresholds and adjust them up or down depending on the dog in front of me.

The reality is, if training at home is going to happen, it needs to be simple. No faff. Easy to set up. Easy to measure. Otherwise, life gets in the way and it doesn’t get done.

We started by building expectations in line-ups before transferring that understanding into searches, helping each dog work at a level that challenged them without overwhelming them.

Some really nice moments of learning, confidence and problem-solving from all the teams. 🐾

☀️ Sunshine, scent and some really nice training!

Last Friday’s scent detection session at a Paintball Park in Kidderminster gave us pretty much perfect conditions for working dogs and handlers alike.

With gun oil, clove and to***co hidden across three very different search areas, the dogs had plenty to think about.

Some returning teams continued building on their training plans, while others focused on commitment to the search, confidence, and building value in their rewards.

As always, every dog needed something slightly different and it’s not always what we perceive that they need.

We had some lovely moments of progress, dogs working through distractions, solving problems, and showing us what they’re capable of when given the opportunity to think.

For some teams, those breakthroughs were big. For others, they were small. To me both matter.

I could happily watch dogs work scent all day. It’s never really about the hide — it’s about the training that happens along the way.

Good training isn’t about collecting workshops… it’s about knowing what to do next 👀🐾

I’ve got a handful of hosted workshop spaces left across the rest of the year with some brilliant instructors covering communication, rewards, detection problem solving and operational protocols.

These aren’t workshops where everyone does the same thing and goes home with a certificate.

They’re designed to help handlers move forward. To understand the dog in front of them, clean up communication, improve decisions and build stronger teams.

Whether you’re:
🐾 a pet owner
🐾 a sports handler
🐾 or operational

…there’s something here to challenge you, make you think and help progress your training.

Dogs work one at a time, handlers are supported, and spectator spaces are a brilliant way to learn without the pressure of working.

A few handler spaces remain across selected workshops and spectator spaces are available.

Motivation, confidence, problem-solving… Monday nights at the farm have it all 👃🐾

From 6-month-old pups just starting their journey, to older dogs still absolutely loving the hunt at 10 years old, every team was working on something slightly different.

Some dogs were building confidence.
Some were learning to work through barriers or understand odour thresholds.
Others were developing clearer indications, stronger motivation, or helping handlers better read what their dogs were telling them.

Working Gun Oil and Kong odours, the dogs really got the chance to think, problem-solve and enjoy the game.

Small steps create thinking dogs 👌🏼

Over the last few sessions the teams have been busy training across urban areas, industrial environments and grass tracks — and it’s been brilliant watching the dogs piece everything together.

We’ve looked at article indication, handler timing, observing those little moments when dogs locate and intercept the track, and building clearer, more accurate road crossings.

But more than anything, we’ve been allowing the dogs to learn the picture.

Small steps in the right direction help dogs understand how to deal with things as they arise instead of constantly relying on the handler for answers. That’s where confidence starts to grow — in both the dog and the handler.

Because Track2Trail isn’t about rushing from A to B. It’s about building thoughtful dogs who can process, problem-solve and work things out with us as part of the team.

The progress from these teams has been lovely to watch 💜 and it’s why I love this method
Regular sessions are available on upcoming Track2Trail sessions we’re going to hone in on match to sample and scent specific dogs - if you’d like to join link in bio

Watching dogs learn never get’s boring for me.

Every team in this reel was working on something slightly different.
Some dogs needed help building motivation.
Some needed confidence.
Some were learning to problem-solve instead of relying on the handler which is a big one.

From a tiny 5-month-old pup just starting out, to older dogs still lighting up the second they catch odour.

That’s the bit I love most about scent detection.
You don’t need robotic dogs or perfect training. You need dogs that want to search.

Sometimes the biggest changes come from the smallest tweaks — a better hide placement, clearer reward timing, giving the dog space to think, or simply letting them work through the picture instead of rushing in to help.

That’s where confidence grows and it’s where the magic starts to happen.

👉Sometimes progressing in training means changing the picture… not pushing harder.

A great day with Mark Doggett at the Northfield school venue this weekend.

This workshop wasn’t about flashy hides or trying to catch dogs out. It was about helping teams move forward in their training by looking at what was really happening in the search picture.

Different dogs. Different levels. Different problems to solve.

Some teams needed to simplify things and rebuild clarity. Others needed more challenge, more independence, or a different scent picture entirely. The beauty of these days is watching training adapt to the dog in front of you rather than forcing every dog into the same mould.

From clean hides to inaccessible source, environmental challenges to handler pressure… the dogs gave us plenty to think about 👀

A huge thank you to everyone who came along with open minds, good attitudes and dogs that gave everything a go 🐾

If you’d like to join future detection workshops or start your own scent detection journey, drop me a message or head over to Bookwhen.
