Did you know Fish oils do not contain protein, which makes it a safe and effective supplement for many dogs with food allergies or sensitivities. Most allergic reactions in dogs are triggered by proteins (in foods like beef, chicken, or certain grains) but not fats.
Fish oil is made by extracting the fatty acids from the fish and leaving the protein behind, so therefore it doesn’t contain the allergens that typically cause reactions. This means dogs with protein allergies can still benefit from our kibbles that include fish oil, without risk of triggering their symptoms. In addition to being allergy-friendly, fish oil provides powerful health benefits, including reduced inflammation, improved skin and coat condition, support for joint health, enhanced brain function, and a stronger immune system, all thanks to its rich content of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA).

Did you know we stock Insect-based kibble, which is an excellent option for dogs with food allergies or sensitivities. It uses novel protein sources like black soldier fly larvae, which are rarely found in traditional pet foods, making them less likely to trigger allergic reactions.
Because most dogs haven’t been exposed to insect protein before, their immune systems are less likely to recognise it as a threat.
Insect protein is also highly digestible and rich in essential nutrients like amino acids, healthy fats, and minerals that support skin, coat, and gut health, all of which can be compromised in dogs with allergies. For dogs with reactions to common proteins like chicken, beef, or lamb, switching to insect-based food can provide a safe, hypoallergenic alternative that’s both gentle on the stomach and nutritionally complete. 🐾

What Is Hypoallergenic Dog Food?
Many dog owners find the term “hypoallergenic dog food” confusing, and it’s easy to assume it means the food is safe for all dogs with allergies. But that’s not always the case.

Hypoallergenic dog food is designed to reduce the risk of allergic reactions or food intolerances by using ingredients that are less likely to trigger sensitivities. These formulas typically include novel protein sources—such as duck, lamb, or venison—and often use a single protein to make it easier on sensitive stomachs. They also commonly exclude known allergens like grains, beef, chicken, or dairy.

However, it’s important to understand that "hypoallergenic" doesn’t mean universally allergy-free. A food can only be hypoallergenic for your dog if it doesn’t contain any ingredients they’re allergic to. For example, a food made with lamb might be labelled hypoallergenic in general, but if your dog is allergic to lamb, that food will still cause a reaction. So even hypoallergenic formulas can be problematic depending on your dog’s specific sensitivities.

It’s always crucial to read ingredient labels carefully. Just because a product is marketed as hypoallergenic doesn’t mean it will work for every dog. The food only works if it truly excludes your dog’s individual triggers. We are always happy to help discuss any potential allergies your dog may have and help find the right food for your dog.

🌟 World Autism Awareness Day 🌟

Today we want to take a moment to recognise Molly, one of our volunteer team members here at Greens of Mendip who works on a Wednesday and a Friday.

Molly asked us to do this post as she wanted to share with you how having Autism and also having a volunteer job has not only provided her with a sense of purpose and independence, but it also allows her to showcase her strengths, including her attention to detail, reliability, and calm demeanor. Molly brings a unique and calming presence to the grooming salon. Her gentle nature has a remarkable effect on the dogs, helping create a peaceful and positive environment for the pups who are in for a groom. 🐾💕

The benefits of a job for someone with autism are endless - boosting confidence, enhancing social skills, and creating opportunities for growth. And we are proud to her have her as part of our team. 💚
