Golden Retriever Rory is a lovely dog, but he has a combination of prey chasing and a particularly bad habit of taking off across parks and open spaces to get to other dogs. π
And that is the point where Roryβs ordinarily fantastic recall becomes totally non-existent.
The problem is, Rory might only want to say hello, and he is an exceptionally happy, friendly boy.......but the dog he runs over to may not feel the same way. And that puts both dogs in a potentially difficult situation.
His owner has done hours and hours of recall training, with thousands of repetitions. But when the environmental competition becomes more motivating than the recall, all of that can go out of the window and Rory would simply decide to do what Rory wanted.
Thatβs where todayβs session came in.
He did really, really well, and with the right training and control in place, Rory can now get back to enjoying being off lead, while his owner has the confidence that he can do so safely.
This isnβt just about stopping a dog from running over to another dog. The same behaviour can create much bigger problems if a dog decides to cross a road, run through a car park, chase wildlife or simply disappear out of sight.
He now knows what is ok, and what isnt. Everything is much clearer, and I'm fairly sure that clarity is what gives a dogs a much more relaxed life ππ
