Just a reminder folks - please don't leave your dog in your car during the summer. Even with the windows down a bit they are very likely to overheat when it's sunny - dogs can and do die in hot cars πŸ₯΅

Happy National Receptionist Day! 🐾

We couldn’t let this week pass without a public shout-out to the incredible reception teams at our Biggar and Peebles branches.

They are the very first faces you see and the comforting voices on the phone when you need us most. From coordinating emergency appointments to handing out endless treats and cuddles, they keep both of our practices running smoothly every single day. Pictured are three familiar faces from our Peebles branch πŸ“Έ

Help us celebrate! Please leave a comment or heart below to thank our Biggar and Peebles reception teams for everything they do. πŸ‘‡β€οΈ

πŸ±πŸ’› Our very own cat-loving Mari, is on a mission this May! πŸ’›πŸ±

This May, our lovely colleague Mari, one of our Animal Health Care Assistants, is taking on a HUGE challenge. She’s walking 50km to raise money for Cats Protection West Lothian! 😻🎽

At work, Mari spends her days caring for our furry patients, giving cuddles when needed, helping them feel safe, and making sure every animal gets the best care possible.

Now she’s swapping the clinic for the running shoes and going the extra miles (literally!) to help cats in need 🐾

If you’re able to donate, even a small amount, it would mean the world and will help support rescue cats with vital care, treatment and rehoming πŸ’› please see link below.

❌ Attention Farmers! ❌

As the weather warms up (finally!) and we get into our summer months, the risk of nematodirus in grazing lambs will be on the rise. This parasite can be a silent killer because the damage happens before you even see eggs in a dung sample. Our main risk period will start in the middle of May through to June.

Look out for:
β€’ Sudden, profuse watery green diarrhoea.
β€’ Lambs looking tucked up or hollow-eyed.
β€’ Intense thirst (lambs congregating around water troughs).
β€’ Rapid weight loss or "failing to thrive."

The "hatch" is triggered by a sudden cold snap followed by a temperature rise to above 10Β°C. Lambs aged 6–12 weeks are at the highest risk as they begin to graze more.

Top Tips:
1. Move lambs to "clean" pasture that wasn't grazed by lambs last year.
2. Monitor the SCOPS Nematodirus Forecast daily.
3. Consult us for the right drenchβ€”White drenches are usually the most effective for this specific worm.

Aside from nematodirus, we always recommend handing in dung samples for worm counts prior to treatment of lambs or ewes. This allows us to monitor not only their worm burdens, but the effectiveness of the wormers they are receiving or flagging other possible causes of scour when their counts are low.

Give us a call if you have concerns, need to stock up on treatment or are heading down to deliver the dung.

Just a wee heads up to our equine clients about influenza. There are currently a number of outbreaks on yards across the UK, including in the Scottish Borders and Lanarkshire.

Equine flu is a highly contagious viral infection which causes a fever, cough and nasal discharge. Symptoms can last 2-3 weeks and horses can be quite unwell, with a cough sometimes lingering for several months.

Please ensure that your horse's flu vaccs are up to date. After the initial course, boosters are usually required at 12 monthly intervals. For horses which are out and about competing and mixing with others, a 6 monthly booster might be considered to maintain maximum levels of protection. Flu symptoms are dramatically reduced in vaccinated horses which encounter the virus.

NB Please take care with timing as horses cannot compete within 7 days of vaccination.

Other things you can do:
Isolate new horses when moving to a new yard (for 3 weeks)
Keep your horse away from others at shows
Wash clothing and disinfect equipment if you travel between yards eg coaching or grooming
Isolate your horse and call us promptly if you notice a nasal discharge, a cough, or if they appear unwell with a temperature
