The 12 Hazards of Christmas πŸŽ„

❌ DAY 12: Stress ❌

Just like us, our pets have different personalities. So, while some take the hustle and bustle of Christmas in their stride, others are not so adaptable. Excited children (or adults) can be noisy for pets causing them to feel anxious. It’s essential to be aware of what can trigger stress in your pets and the ways you can help manage this. Lots of new noises, smells, decorations, visitors, travel, new environments and changes in routine can lead to your dog feeling overwhelmed and anxious.

TOP TIPS:

β€’ Safe Space: Set up a quiet room or corner (away from noise/guests) with their bed, water, and toys.

β€’ Routine: Stick to regular feeding and walking times to provide security.

β€’ Secure Home: Prevent pets from slipping out doors when guests arrive.

β€’ Slow Introductions: Allow pets to approach new visitors on their own terms.

By planning ahead and being mindful of your pet's needs, you can ensure a safer and less stressful Christmas for the whole family, including the furry members.

The 12 Hazards of Christmas πŸŽ„

❌ DAY 10 & 11: BONES AND BATTERIES ❌

🦴 Bones are a major Christmas hazard for pets (dogs especially) because cooked bones splinter easily, causing choking, internal blockages, or punctured digestive tracts, leading to emergency vet visits. Always dispose of turkey/meat bones immediately in secure outside bins to prevent pets and wildlife from scavenging. Avoid giving any cooked bones as treats, opting for pet-safe chews instead.

πŸ”‹ During the Christmas rush, keep batteries secure, check toy compartments, supervise pet play around gifts, and dispose of old batteries safely to prevent poisoning, fires, and costly emergencies. Batteries can cause serious internal damage if chewed or swallowed by pets. Alkaline batteries leak a caustic substance that can burn your pet’s mouth, oesophagus or stomach. If you suspect your pet has swallowed a battery, contact your vet immediately.

The 12 Hazards of Christmas πŸŽ„

❌ DAY 8 & 9: Road salt & Antifreeze❌

Road salt and antifreeze pose serious risks to pets, leading to paw irritation, gastrointestinal upset, and potentially fatal kidney damage or salt poisoning if ingested. Antifreeze containing ethylene glycol is extremely toxic to pets, even in small amounts, and has a sweet taste that attracts them. Once ingested, it rapidly causes severe, often irreversible, kidney damage.

Road salt (rock salt) can cause irritation or chemical burns on a pet's paws. Ingestion, usually from licking paws after a walk, can cause high blood sodium levels (salt toxicosis).

Prevention Measures

β€’ Clean Spills: Immediately clean up any antifreeze spills in garages or driveways.
β€’ Store Safely: Keep all antifreeze containers securely closed and out of reach of pets.
β€’ Use Safer Alternatives: Opt for antifreeze products containing propylene glycol, which is less toxic than ethylene glycol.
β€’ Protect Paws: Use protective booties or apply a pet-safe paw balm before walks.
β€’ Avoid Salted Areas: Whenever possible, walk pets in areas not treated with rock salt.
β€’ Rinse Paws: Thoroughly rinse and dry paws with warm water and a towel after walks on salted surfaces.
β€’ Supervise: Ensure pets do not eat clumps of rock salt off the ground or drink from roadside puddles that may be contaminated.

The 12 Hazards of Christmas πŸŽ„

❌ DAY 7: Alcohol ❌

Unattended Christmas drinks are a serious pet hazard because alcohol is toxic to dogs and cats, causing vomiting, seizures, coma, or worse, even in small amounts from spilled drinks. Consider popping bottles of alcohol such as champagne and prosecco in a separate room from your pets and Christmas crackers as these can make a loud β€˜popping’ sound and cause them to panic.

The 12 Hazards of Christmas πŸŽ„

❌ DAY 6: ONIONS ❌

That stuffing smells amazing, but it’s a big NO for pets!

While it’s tempting to share your Christmas feast with your pets, their digestive systems are much more sensitive than ours. Festive recipes often contain onion and garlic but these ingredients are toxic to pets. Always avoid giving pets table scraps with these ingredients, including gravy, stuffing, and rich leftovers, and stick to plain, cooked meat or pet-safe alternatives for holiday treats to prevent poisoning and serious illness.

If you suspect your pet has ingested any of these harmful foods, contact your vet surgeon immediately. Do not wait for symptoms to appear. The sooner they receive veterinary attention, the better their prognosis. Have the information ready about what your pet ate, approximately how much, and when.

We have a range of festive treats and toys available for cats and dogs which would be a much safer alternative over the holidays.

The 12 Hazards of Christmas πŸŽ„

❌ DAY 5: TOXIC PLANTS ❌

Christmas decorations bring joy, but many popular plants can be dangerous for our curious pets. As veterinary professionals, we urge you to keep these common hazards out of paws' reach this holiday season!

β€’ Lilies: EXTREMELY toxic to cats! Even pollen can cause fatal kidney failure. Keep these completely out of the house.

β€’ Holly & Mistletoe: These berries and leaves cause severe stomach upset, drooling, and digestive distress.

β€’ Amaryllis & Yew: All parts of these plants are highly poisonous and potentially life-threatening if ingested.

β€’ Poinsettias: While less dangerous than others, they still cause drooling and vomiting if pets chew on them.

If you suspect your pet has eaten any part of a hazardous plant, contact your vet immediately. Don't wait for symptoms!

The 12 Hazards of Christmas πŸŽ„

❌DAY 3 & 4: Christmas lights and decorations ❌

Typical holiday decorations can be irresistible to curious pets. Unfortunately, swallowing tinsel or chewing on lights not only dampens the festive spirit but can lead to serious health issues and an emergency vet visit. If knocked to the floor, glass ornaments and baubles will shatter and injure your pet should they stand on any broken pieces. To avoid accidents, use unbreakable plastic ornaments. Place them higher on the tree to keep them out of the way of wagging tails or playful paws.

Keep decking the halls, but consider replacing potentially dangerous decorations (glass ornaments, for instance) with more pet-friendly ones.
