🎈 SUCCESS STORY SATURDAY 🎈

Beinn Teallach was the most intelligent and arguably the bravest of the four Hoppy Hillwalker sisters. From day one, she was unstoppable, blessed with wisdom beyond her years.

She was stubborn and didn’t like to be told no, by humans or bunnies, and she was always very sure of her decisions. She held the weight of her siblings on her shoulders, and was very much the one who looked out for her sisters. She bravely explored new places and makes herself instantly right at home.

A mirror image of her mother, Mama Bunro, Teallach inherited her caring and clever nature. A natural problem solver, she thrived on tackling new puzzle toys.

Teallach was the first of the babies to venture out on her own, a bittersweet moment for us as we invest our hearts and souls into nurturing these little ones at the rescue. Yet, we couldn't be prouder of this remarkable girl.

Ready to leave her siblings behind, she sought a proper companion, and her new friend was eager to meet her after the loss of his brother.

In January, this brave little girl journeyed to England on her own, embarking on a thrilling new chapter. She faced the trip with poise and has been zooming and binkying ever since her arrival! After a successful bonding with the tiny Potato, these two have become inseparable friends. Potato has returned to his cheeky self, scampering around, climbing onto the back of the sofa, honking for his meals, and flopping in the warm sunshine. We’re so grateful that Teallach (now Tilly) has such a wonderful family.

How has the loss of Bunzilla affected Behemoth?

5 years together since birth, a bond like no other.

When we first discussed Bunzillas conditon and that we knew her life was coming to an end, we planned to euthanise them together. We didn't think he would want to live without her, and he too was on palliative care. What if she left him behind and he became a shell of himself and we wished they had gone to sleep peacefully together.

But as that date approached, it was clear he still had life to live and we couldn't bring ourselves to do it. We trusted he would be OK.

After her heart stopped beating, Behemoth lay over her body for over 12 hours. He had his goodbye's.

A few days later after her body was removed, he took his first hops outside the house. And he never looked back.

Since then, it's been clear just how much he was staying inside for her to be close to her loyal to her to the end. But now that she's gone, he has gone back to do what he wants to do.

His free spirited side has come out, and he spends his days in the garden not wanting to be inside. The weight of someone we love being poorly weighed heavy on us all, including him it seems.

We know his time will come, but for now our King of the rescue is enjoying his time in his Kingdom. 🏰

What a fantastic night it was last night! 🖤🥃

No hangovers allowed when you have bunnies. Faces impatiently awaiting fibasticks at 6am and thumps until fed. 🤭🤣

It's going to a buntastic evening! 🐇

TRIGGER WARNING ⚠️ EUTHANASIA

What did we do to prepare her passing?

Having time to prepare allowed us to give her the exact death we had wished for so many but weren't able to give. In her own environment, calm, peaceful, surrounded by love and family.

What people didn't know is, we had arranged the euthanasia and every day we were grieving her loss even though she was still here. Behind closed doors we sobbed into her fur, knowing we only had precious moments left with her. We mourned her loss before she was even gone.

Although we booked in for the following week, with each day she got worse we worried that we hadn't booked it soon enough.

Our last night together we had one big camp out with her. We made the floor in their room into a big bed and we all cuddled together, watched movies and gave her every snack and treat she wanted. She flopped next to us all night, purring away as we squished her cheeks and kissed her. The boys either side of her, looked after her too. They both knew, and were ready.

Eilidh came out the following morning and there on the floor, she prepared the sedation and lethal injection. She was amazing, so kind, so caring. Bunzilla lay calmly in her flop bed, she was ready. Behemoth nudged Eilidh, and then both boys snuggled down next to Bunzilla.

There was no fight, she fell asleep with her chin in my hand. Behemoth pressed his head to hers, as her heart stopped beating he lay next to her the entire time. We told stories about her antics, her life with us and shared her legacy.

It was the most beautiful and kind death we've ever experienced. She really did just fall asleep in her bed, with her family around her. Pain-free, safe and loved. 🌈

Each year as a team we discuss ways to ensure the sustainability of our organisation and rescue work.

What are the biggest challenges we are facing? What is changing within the rescue space? What is putting us most at risk of closure? How can we improve rabbit welfare and the lives of rabbits in Scotland?

5 years ago we continually went back to the main source putting us at risk of closure - veterinary services.

Mounting costs, transport and time, lack of funds, health issues of rabbits entering rescue, cost of living preventing rabbits receiving any medical care from the public (also being a big cause for surrender). Scotland is a vast space which had few specialist veterinary services for rabbits, taking up huge amount of resources to ensure rabbits in our care received the very best medical care. Lack of basic care like neutering by the public being a major factor in stress on rescue services.

How do rescues combat their biggest factor in closure?

Speak to other organisations and associations who inspire you, gather resources, study, train, shadow, learn. Travel to watch how others do it, be open minded enough to listen and learn. Work harder and harder. Plan for the future.

All to ensure a future for rabbits in Scotland.

⚠️ SEPTEMBER APPOINTMENTS PLEASE READ ⚠️

It all kicked off here at the rescue with major construction on the main property which begun this week. This work will be going on for approx 6 weeks and does not affect any bookings. However, it does affect our appointments during working hours!

Until further notice, during working hours we will be unable to do appointments at the usual gate drop off point, so instead please come to the front door and we will get you and your bunnies there instead. This mainly affects boarding pick up and drop offs, everything else has been diverted to the OHS.

Don't worry we promise it will be worth it! Special needs bunny rooms coming soon. ❤️‍🩹🐇

Bunzilla was a Continental Giant and wanted us to refresh your memory on the complex care needs that come with this breed. ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️

CONTINENTAL GIANTS

Continental Giants are the largest breed of rabbit and originated from the Flemish giant in the 1980's as a meat rabbit. They gained popularity as 'house buns' due to their dog like size and docile personality. They can weigh between 7-10kg.

These big buns have now been bred as purely companion animals as they can get on well in homes with children and other animals. They are very bolshy in nature and can cause a lot of destruction simply due to their size and strength. Due to over breeding they tend to be either extremely chilled and confident or anxious and defensive with no in-between.

With this big bolshy bun comes a lot of care. What are their care needs?

Eyes - 'Cherry eye' which is the prolapse and bulge of the third eyelid is common in giants. Check the eye regularly for good eye health, drops may be needed to keep the eye moist. If the eye sags or the third eyelid gets any more pronounced, have their hearts checked as this can indicate the heart is struggling. Heart attacks and an enlarged heart is common so have the heart regularly checked, catching signs early can save their life.

Feet - These big feet can do big thumps! The pressure on their hocks leads to Pododermatitis so check the feet weekly for signs of sore hocks. Keep them on a surface with lots of rugs and provide large deep litter trays with straw and soft hay where they can rest their hocks. Early signs of Pododermatitis should be treated as soon as possible with antibacterial ointment, aloe gel and soft socks to allow healing. Further trauma to the hocks will require bandaging and more invasive medical treatment. Ensure the nails are clipped every few weeks short as long nails contribute to hock pressure.

Coat - With a thick, dense coat, this requires a lot of maintenance and brushing to prevent matting. Blow into the coat to check for any dry areas and remove undercoat using a comb when it is ready to come out. Tease out matts from the feet and along the sides of the tail. Check their bottom area and neck/chin daily for matting and or dirty areas which can be due to struggling to groom themselves.

Joints - With their size and weight comes more pressure on the joints. Avoid lots of stairs and ensure flooring is soft and grippy as soft surfaces can lead to joint pain and slipped discs. Broken bones are common so ensure no access to icy areas outdoors and always provide landing surfaces such as mats in front of litter trays and on top of hides, below hides. By age 2, arthritis is almost inevitable so pain relief and anti inflammatories are vital in their later years. Plants which provide these herbal benefits can also be given lifelong.

Diet - This breed thrives on a mainly hay and fresh plant diet. Avoid giving starchy veg and wheat based treats as this can cause weight gain. These buns should not be excessively large carrying lots of fat as this can lead to further strain on their joints and heart. Keep them light and mobile and on a healthy diet. As they can be lazy due to their size, weight gain should be avoided. They do not require vast bowls of feed or more than a standard sized rabbit, they so however need an abundance of hay and grass. Offer plants from a young age that have heart and joint health properties and avoid masses of dry food or barley rings. Provide branches for gnawing on and lots of natural enrichment toys as they love to chew.

How do you feel about this?

Surrendered because -

"Despite our best efforts over the last two years, they still remain very timid and independent. They are happy in their environment but do not want to interact with us at all and it is just not possible for us to continue with them as pets."

This adorable little pair were one of our favourite pairs who came for holiday boarding. Having spent many a school holiday with us, we looked forward to their cheeky antics, their loveable characters and spending time with them when they booked in. Yet the family had them for 2 years in a shed and didn't connect with them. So much so, they have surrendered them over to us.

After buying them from a breeder, they had unrealistic expectations of what they would be. Toys? Cuddly things to pick up and stroke?

Who is responsible for the unrealistic expectations -
The breeder?
Media?

This brother sister pair are the friendliest little pair who come and stay with us, and yet they've been surrendered for not being friendly enough. Make that make sense.
