Cat whiskers are rich in nerves and are connected to muscles, letting felines measure gaps without their bodies touching the surroundings. Have you ever seen your cat pause and assess a doorway or a narrow space before gliding through? 🐱

Small mammals including rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets can sometimes sustain a foreign body injury.

This is often in the form of grass seeds, hay splinters or blades of grass trapped around their eyes, nose, ears and mouth.

If left untreated, these can cause irritation, infection and soreness.

We recommend routinely checking your pets for any signs of swelling and redness.

If you suspect that your pet has a foreign body or injury, let us take a look for you. 🐰 🐹

Hip dysplasia is a common condition where the femur doesn’t fit properly in the hip socket, causing wear and tear, pain, and arthritis over time.

It can affect any dog, but is especially common in medium to large breeds, and sometimes very active pups.

Signs include:

👉 Stiffness after rest and slowing down on walks.

👉 “Bunny hopping” when running (when a dog moves both back legs forward at the same time).

👉 Difficulty jumping into the car or onto the sofa.

👉 Limping or swinging the hips when walking.

👉 Reluctance to use stairs or play like they used to.

Diagnosis will combine a physical examination with X-rays to assess joint shape and arthritis. Sedation might be needed for accurate positioning and comfort.

Treatment will depend on severity and age, and it can include weight control and an exercise plan (an appropriate weight makes a huge difference for joint pain), physiotherapy or hydrotherapy, pain relief and joint-support supplementation.

Severe cases may benefit from a surgical procedure to improve joint function.

Get in touch with us if you spot any of these signs in your pet!

At Happy Tails Vets, we meet so many wonderful patients, but Amber’s story is one that truly stands out, especially when it comes to managing complex skin conditions.

Amber, a sweet and gentle 8.5-year-old Poodle, first came to see us with ongoing skin issues that were clearly affecting her quality of life. Her coat had changed significantly, and she was experiencing persistent irritation that left her uncomfortable. Skin conditions like Amber’s are rarely simple, and that’s because the skin itself is one of the most complex organs in the body. It acts as a barrier, an immune organ, and a reflection of internal health, which means problems often have multiple contributing factors rather than a single cause.

After thorough assessment, Amber was diagnosed with atopy (allergic skin disease) alongside a Malassezia (yeast infection), two conditions that commonly occur together and can be challenging to manage. These issues can lead to itchiness, inflammation, and recurring infections, and they often require more than just a single treatment approach.

In fact, managing skin disease typically requires a multimodal plan, addressing allergies, controlling infections, supporting the skin barrier, and sometimes looking deeper at underlying health conditions. In Amber’s case, further testing also revealed hypothyroidism, which can contribute to poor skin and coat quality as well as low energy levels.

With a tailored treatment plan in place, targeting her allergies, treating the yeast overgrowth, and managing her thyroid levels, Amber began to improve steadily. Her skin became calmer and healthier, her coat regained its softness and shine, and she was finally more comfortable in herself.

Today, Amber is thriving. Her skin is well managed, her energy is back, and she’s once again the happy, comfortable dog she deserves to be. Her story is a lovely reminder that while skin conditions can be complex and sometimes frustrating, the right combination of care, persistence, and veterinary support can make a life changing difference.

We’re so proud to have been part of Amber’s journey and to see her doing so well.

Adders are the only venomous snake native to the UK and are usually not aggressive, but they can bite if provoked by a curious pet.

Adder bites can become serious very quickly, so knowing what to look out for is important.

Clinical signs of an adder bite include:

👉 Rapid and progressive swelling around the bite site

👉 Localised bruising

👉 Pain

👉 Lethargy

👉 Vomiting

👉 Bleeding

👉 Collapse

Pets are commonly bitten on the leg, head or neck, so it is important to stay alert when out walking, especially in areas where adders may live.

If your pet gets bitten by an adder or suddenly develops swelling or seems unwell after being outdoors, get in touch with us right away.

A long weekend is the perfect chance to slow down and spend some quality time with your pet.

Bank holiday plans do not need to be anything big to be special. A simple walk, some extra playtime, a visit to a favourite spot, or a lazy afternoon in the garden can all be lovely ways to enjoy the break together.

However you spend it, we hope your bank holiday is full of happy moments, wagging tails and plenty of fresh air.

How are you spending the bank holiday with your pet? Let us know in the comments.

Wondering what happens once your pet is asleep for surgery? 💤

Behind the scenes, a dedicated and highly trained veterinary nurse is glued to their side, tracking every heartbeat and breath.

Our monitors display heart rate, heart rhythm, breathing rate, oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, blood pressure and body temperature in real-time. If anything changes, the team adjusts anaesthetic depth, fluids or warmth right away to keep your pet stable and comfortable.

Continuous monitoring means tiny changes are spotted long before they become problems, turning modern anaesthesia into a carefully choreographed balance.

Not to mention that before any surgery, we perform a full physical exam and recommend pre-anaesthetic bloodwork to ensure the procedure is safe for your pet.

Knowing trained professionals watch over your pet from before the surgery to recovery lets you focus on those reunion cuddles instead of the what ifs. 🩺
