Happy World Environment Day! πŸ’šπŸŒ

Did you know we're home to over 10 hectares of protected heathland that's so special it's designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)?

This rare habitat has disappeared from much of the UK, making places like ours more important than ever. That's why we've spent more than a decade restoring and protecting it. πŸ₯°

One of our most important conservation teams has four legs and a very woolly coat... the Soay sheep! πŸ‘ These hardy grazers help keep the heathland healthy by nibbling back brambles, scrub and young saplings that would otherwise take over, giving important plants like heather the space they need to thrive.

And with the habitat improving, the heather is flourishing and wildlife is returning too 🌿✨
From the distinctive call of the cuckoo and flashes of sparrowhawk overhead, to ground-dwelling slow worms, common lizards and vibrant redstarts. You might also spot yellowhammers in the scrub, marbled white butterflies drifting through the grass, and even the striking emperor moth. πŸ¦‹

Today, we're celebrating the species, habitats and conservation work that help nature thrive. 🧑

Ozzy and Oasis are officially entering their cheeky era! 😎

These sassy little chicks have been keeping our keepers on their toes during daily checks, with plenty of personality already shining through. Last week, Ozzy was spotted perfecting the art of sunbathing... but don't worry, they were making the most of the watered-down sand to keep their belly nice and cool! β˜€οΈπŸ’¦

We can't get enough of these two. Which chick do you think is causing the most mischief? πŸ‘€πŸ’™

01/06/2026

We've also welcomed two adorable new additions to the Safari Family - penguin chicks Ozzy and Oasis 🐧🐧

From animal adventures to family fun across the Park, it's been a month packed full of memories... but we're not finished yet. πŸ‘€

Something BIG is coming in June, and it's going to be JURASSIC... πŸ¦–πŸ’₯

All will be revealed tomorrow. Watch this space! πŸ‘€β³

It’s World Sea Lion Day! 🦭

Think sea lions and seals are the same? Not quite! Here’s how to tell them apart πŸ‘‡

🦻 Ears
Sea lions have visible ear flaps, seals don’t (just small ear holes).

βœ‹ Flippers
Sea lions have long front flippers with claws, seals have shorter, furrier ones.

🚢 On land
Sea lions can β€œwalk” and even gallop, seals shuffle on their bellies.

🌊 In the water
Sea lions use their front flippers to power through, seals use their back flippers.

πŸ”Š Sound & social life
Sea lions are loud and social, seals are quieter and more solitary.

πŸ“ Learn all about sea lions at one of our daily talks and discover more about these amazing animals up close! πŸ¦πŸ’™
