So I asked my liveries what changes they have seen in their horses since moving to the track.
The change in our home-bred mare Ruby since moving her 3 months ago has been nothing short of remarkable. Previously, she could easily become anxious and stressed due to having to be muzzled on the grass or in her stable— constantly on edge and in 17 years we had never seen her lie down outside, now she’s often to be found day time napping!
Since joining this track, she’s absolutely thriving. She now enjoys the freedom to just be a horse— with natural herd dynamics, and the companionship she clearly craved. It brings us so much joy to know she finally feels safe and at ease.
Another unexpected change is how content she is when we visit. In the past, she would rush to us the moment we arrived, clearly needing comfort, reassurance and been very food driven. Now, she often doesn’t even look up — not because she’s uninterested, but because she’s happy, secure, and fully relaxed in her environment.
This yard has given her the lifestyle she was meant for. It allows us to continue to manage her weight with exercise and freedom, honestly something we didnt think was possible.
Downside… the colour of her! She spends so long grooming other horses and laying down that she’s never clean! 😂
This same horse is usually rugged all year round as she suffers from sweetich. This year however we are missing a lot of mane, I'm assured less than usual. She is still itching, bt she has a hair on her belly still and has only made herself sore on 1 occasion. Bt she has been rugless and maskless all summer. I can't possibly explain why this has been the case. Bt it has also been noticed that another pony hasn't had her usual random allergic reactions which she randomly gets on grass.
