💭 Did you know…

The Queen has owned more than 30 corgis during her reign, most of which have been descendants of her first corgi Susan, a special gift on her 18th birthday in 1944.

The Queen is not the only Royal to own dogs – in fact, most of the Royal Family share their homes with dogs. 🐶🐶

It’s no wonder that many pet owners will proudly celebrate this weekend and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with their pets.

Handsome Loki enjoys visiting us; even when we're closed for non-emergency appointments, he sits patiently on the doorstep for us when walking past our branch on his daily walks. 🐾

It's so lovely to see that he enjoys his visits to the vets; we love welcoming you and seeing you to Loki! ❤️

Dear Pet Owner,

In 2018, Clarke and Marshall joined Linnaeus who are part of Mars Veterinary Health, a leading provider of veterinary services. For the last two years, Clarke and Marshall have worked closely with Village Vet. During this period, they have provided us with out of hours and emergency support.

Over the next few weeks, we will be changing our practice name from Clarke & Marshall Veterinary Surgery to Village Vet Berkhamsted.

There will be little change on a day to day basis and our service and commitment to our clients will continue as normal. Dr Harriet Nicholson will continue to cater to all your questions and concerns and will remain as the Head Veterinary Surgeon.

Harriet Nicholson has stated “We are committed to upholding our long-standing values of providing the best possible level of veterinary care to our clients. We are glad to be a part of a group that strongly believes in delivering a Gold Standard of clinical care.”

Village Vet Berkhamsted clients will benefit from several additional services as a part of the Village Vet group; these include:

-Pet Health Club – You can spread the cost of routine preventative pet care and save money on every trip to the vet.
-Online Booking – Book your next appointment on the go!
-Video Consultations – Speak to a vet from the comfort of your home.
-Access to a specialist referral centre – State of the art facility with world-leading veterinary professionals at London Vet Specialists for cases that require specialists and other referral centres across Linnaeus.
-Village Vet Cattery – We can arrange for your cat to be picked up and dropped off giving you peace of mind while you are away on holiday.

Thank you for your continued loyalty! We greatly value the bonds that we have developed with you and your pets. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us via telephone on 01442 862776 with any questions or concerns.

Today is World Animal Day, a day focussed on raising standards for animal welfare around the globe. While most of us pamper our pets, spare a thought for animals across the world who are kept in poor conditions, whether privately or commercially.

How you can help:

Call out cruelty – if you see an animal in poor conditions, report it. The RSPCA has a dedicated cruelty phoneline: https://www.rspca.org.uk/utilities/contactus/reportcruelty

Support animal welfare charities – whether it’s with a financial donation or volunteering your time, there are local, national and global charities which will be grateful of anything you can do to help them fight for animal rights.

Autumn is the perfect season to enjoy quality time with your dog in the great outdoors! 🍂

Before the cold mornings and dark nights set in, take the time to enjoy the crisp air and autumn colours during an open-air adventure. With the heat of summer now a distant memory, this time of year is a great opportunity to take a scenic, walk through nature with your four-legged friend. 🐕

Whether a ramble, a hike or a quick walk, ensure that your dog is protected from fleas, ticks and worms.

If you need to check the level of protection or re-order parasiticide treatment, don’t hesitate to contact our friendly practice team.

Today is World Rabies Day. An international day of awareness and advocacy to help encourage vaccination efforts.

Thankfully, rabies does not circulate in either wild or domestic animals in the UK. If you plan to travel with your pet within the European Union or elsewhere in the world, rabies vaccination is mandatory to obtain the necessary travel documents.

Please review the new guidelines that will be effective in 2021 to travel to the EU to ensure you can comply with the requirements http://ow.ly/rybW50BCdFh

If you can’t feel your dog’s ribs when you stroke them, it may be time to change some behaviours. As our pets instinctively try to hide when they are in pain and they can’t tell us how they are feeling, it’s up to us to recognise the signs and to get them the help they need. As a part of Animal Pain Awareness Month, the International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management (IVAPM) has created a handy infographic for signs to keep an eye out for.

As summer comes to an end and autumn begins, our gardens are beginning to change. Gone are the summer flowers which attract the bees, and in their place piles of fallen leaves.

While you may be tempted to clear decaying matter, it can make a cosy home for hedgehogs. Alternatively, a small wooden box lined with newspaper will create a welcome refuge for prickly visitors.

Keep bird food and water topped up in preparation for the upcoming sparse winter months. Bird feeders should be cleaned regularly for hygiene purposes.

How do you prepare your garden for autumn?
