🐾 Another Wonderful Review! 🐾

I am incredibly grateful when clients take the time to leave a review after working with me and their dogs.

Receiving positive feedback means so much, especially knowing that I have helped both owners and their dogs build a stronger relationship and better understanding of each other.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support Kate's K9 Training, recommends me to friends and family, and trusts me to be part of their dog's training journey.

Every review, recommendation, and kind word is hugely appreciated.

🐾✨ That's a wrap – Puppy Training Classes, June 2026! ✨🐾

What an epic six weeks it has been!

A huge well done to all of the fabulous puppies and their dedicated owners. Watching your confidence, skills and partnerships grow each week has been an absolute pleasure.

From those first tentative steps into class to seeing the progress you've all made, every puppy should be incredibly proud of themselves. 🌟

Thank you all for your hard work, commitment and enthusiasm throughout the course.

I'll see many of you next week for the Chaos to Calm follow-on training class, where we'll continue building on those foundations and developing even more life skills.

Fabulous work, everyone! πŸ‘πŸΆ

Quick little training session, with our Olive 🌸

28/05/2026

What is a β€œHold” cue in dog training? 🐾

β€œHold” is when we teach a dog to calmly, when requested, hold an item in their mouth until released. It can be particularly useful for gundogs and dogs that naturally enjoy carrying or holding objects.

Teaching a hold cue can provide an appropriate outlet for breed-specific behaviours and help fulfil some of those natural retrieving instincts in a controlled way.

Here’s a progression session with Olive learning her β€œHold” cue. Now that Olive understands the concept, I’ve started introducing different items for her to hold.

Although Olive is a retriever, she is also very sensitive with her mouth, so it’s important that I respect that sensitivity and work at her pace.

Today, I introduced a new item β€” a cardboard straw. At first, she was only confident holding it for a second, so we kept things easy and positive. Once she felt comfortable, I gently increased the challenge by asking for a little more duration, and she did really well 🌟

A beautiful, honest review from a client this evening has made all the hard work, commitment, tears, and hours of continued study feel so worthwhile.

When you run your own business and a client takes the time to leave such a wonderful review, it honestly means so much.

Ralphy is now on his fourth group class alongside 1-2-1 training sessions to help work through some of the challenges that can come during adolescence. I absolutely love working with owners who are fully committed to their puppies and want the very best for them and the life they will share together πŸ’•πŸΎ

Thank you πŸ™

🐾 This was a post I wrote a couple of weeks ago but completely forgot to post! 🐾

I have had lots of enquiries recently from new puppy owners, so I thought now was the perfect time to share it.

Getting a puppy is exciting, emotional, exhausting, overwhelming, and wonderful all at the same time πŸ˜…πŸΆ

But one thing I really want new puppy owners to understand is this:

✨ Early guidance and training really matter. ✨

So many of the behaviours owners struggle with later on often begin during puppyhood:
❌ Biting
❌ Pulling on the lead
❌ Poor recall
❌ Jumping up
❌ Reactivity
❌ Over-arousal
❌ Separation issues
❌ Lack of calmness

Puppies do not automatically grow into calm, well-adjusted dogs without guidance.

They need:
βœ” Structure
βœ” Sleep
βœ” Boundaries
βœ” Appropriate socialisation
βœ” Calmness training
βœ” Relationship building
βœ” Mental enrichment
βœ” Clear communication

The earlier you start helping your puppy learn these life skills, the easier adolescence and adulthood often become.

If you are:
🐢 Getting a new puppy
🐢 Have recently brought a puppy home
🐢 Feeling overwhelmed
🐢 Wanting support and guidance

πŸ“© Please do get in contact β€” I would love to help you.

Owning a puppy can feel hard at times, but with the right support, it becomes so much easier and more enjoyable for both you and your dog.

Gundogs Don’t Always Need MORE Walks…
They Need More Mental Fulfilment 🧠🐢

Many gundog breeds were originally bred to:

βœ” Search
βœ” Retrieve
βœ” Use their nose
βœ” Work cooperatively with their handler

If you own a Spaniel, Retriever, Vizsla, Pointer or other working breed, simply walking them further and further often isn’t enough.

Very often these dogs become:
❌ Overstimulated
❌ Frustrated
❌ Unable to switch off
❌ Reactive or over-aroused

What they really need is appropriate mental stimulation that fulfils what they were bred to do.

Try these simple gundog-inspired games at home πŸ‘‡

🐾 1. Blind Retrieves
Throw a dummy, Tennis Ball or toy into an area your dog cannot clearly see. Long grass is always good idea! Be there to help them if needed and start by throwing a small distance away until they get more confident in finding the item.

Your dog must:
βœ” Search
βœ” Problem solve
βœ” Use their nose instead of just their eyes

🐾 2. Memory Retrieves
Place a scented article or dummy down behind you while your dog watches.

Walk away with your dog before turning and sending them back to find it.

This encourages:
βœ” Memory
βœ” Focus
βœ” Scent work
βœ” Independence

🐾 3. Scatter Feeding
Take part of your dog’s daily food allowance and scatter it across the grass or garden.

This simple game:
βœ” Encourages natural foraging
βœ” Activates the nose
βœ” Reduces arousal
βœ” Provides calming enrichment

πŸ’‘ Top Tip:
During searches, occasionally help your dog by calmly pointing towards the search area so the process stays cooperative and connected.

The goal is not frustration β€” it is teamwork.

✨ A mentally fulfilled dog is often a calmer, happier dog.

Come and join me behind the scenes as I prepare and set up for my Saturday training classes πŸ•πŸΎ

The hot weather didn’t stop us this morning β€” we started our classes early to avoid the heat πŸ”₯ and made sure the dogs had lots of paddling pool fun to cool down afterwards πŸ’¦

It’s so lovely to see every dog and handler team progressing each week. Everyone is at different stages in their training journey, and watching their confidence grow is always so rewarding.

Our current classes are nearly finished, with the next Puppy Training courses starting in June 🌟
