๐†๐ซ๐š๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐†๐ซ๐จ๐ฐ๐ญ๐ก ๐”๐ฉ๐๐š๐ญ๐ž -- the driest July on record!๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿฅต

As we move into August, do you notice your grass getting browner by the day? ๐Ÿœ

The lack of rainfall has hit us all ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฑ. In fact, July 2026 is thought to be ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฑ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜ in almost 200 years. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿช

It was the first two weeks of July where ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐˜„๐˜๐—ต ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐˜€๐—น๐—ผ๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—ฑ by over 30%, plummeting below the 6 year average. Whilst ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜ for many of us in the coming weeks, the growth rate will struggle to get back to its usual score.

It is really important to avoid generalisations when looking at the relationship between our horse's waistlines and the grass growth rate but, a lot of us have fat horses despite very brown paddocks.๐Ÿท๐Ÿ˜”

๐—”๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ'๐˜€ ๐˜„๐—ต๐˜†.๐Ÿ‘‡

When plants are stressed sugar accumulates. ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ“ˆ

Stress happens when grass lacks any of the following items:
๐Ÿ’ง,๐ŸŒž,๐ŸŒก (no prizes for guessing which we're missing!)

And the worst part is- the accumulation of sugar has been coupled with a pretty poor volume of fibre - leaving horses to feel hungry too. ๐Ÿด๐Ÿฝ

So we may see our horses spend longer grazing and less time resting or playing to try and chase that gut fill.

Not exactly. ๐Ÿซฃ

Depending on your pasture, some of your grass may still have seed heads which are, unhelpfully, ๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ต ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ด๐—ฎ๐—ฟ (ryegrass typically sheds its seeds between May and August). Seed heads appear when the grass is quite tall (about 30-60cm๐Ÿ“), but this would typically make the grazing unsuitable for good-doers โŒ

It's a ๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐˜„๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—บ๐˜† of problems. Sugar in the short grass, sugar in the long stuff. In fact, ๐—ป๐—ผ ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜€ ๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ด๐—ฎ๐—ฟ ๐—ณ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ so you need to stop wishing for a fool-proof solution sadly. ๐Ÿ’ญ

However, if you have pasture which is a bit shorter (around 20cm and without seed), but longer than the brown dust bowl many of us have, you may be able to utilise this. ๐—›๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ต!โœ…

But, as with anything, ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ, so take a minute! โœ‹

Typically, if you have an overweight or metabolic horse, don't look at your rested field and turn them loose, freeing them from the desert-like conditions of their summer pasture indefinitely.

The risk of gorging๐Ÿท is very high, so considering any or all of the following would be a great idea:
๐ŸŒฑA well fitted grazing muzzle
๐Ÿ“Strip grazing
๐ŸดPoor doers first
โณ๏ธA phased introduction

And remember... check for:
๐ŸฆถFootsoreness
๐Ÿ”ฅHeat (in any amount of feet)
๐Ÿซ Flexibility/softness in soles of the foot
๐Ÿ‘Swelling above the eyes
โ†”๏ธShifting of weight from one foot to another
๐Ÿ˜ด Lethargy
๐ŸฉบPulses
๐ŸŒฑFirmness in the neck
