I've been working with gorgeous little red head Suki for 3 months. She's only 10 months old and was really struggling with grooming. She'd had a couple of grooms elsewhere but was really snappy and her behaviour was escalating so her guardians came to me for some help on recommendation of who's also been working with them.
She was absolutely terrified of me, lunged at me, snapped at me and wee'd on the floor in fear. Fast forward 3 months and she actually likes me, helicopter tail, kisses, wiggly little body and she gets excited to come. It's been a journey and we are still very much on it but I'm so proud of her progress.
To make things even harder she was getting long and matted and even had to have a sedated bum/tail shave at the vets when she got messy and wouldn't let anyone clean her.
Her reactivity is unpredictable and quite explosive, she gets over aroused very easily and seems to be very sensitive around her back end, particularly her left hip and leg. She doesn't like fast hand movements and she gets suspicious very easily. I wasn't able to pet her until quite recently.
Suki struggles in life aswell as grooming. Her behaviour is erratic so we are querying whether she might have pain and Val has recommended a physio assessment. Me and Val both noticed her movement is quite stiff and she avoids having her back end messed with. It's very difficult to assess pain as she's terrified of the vet and can't be examined without sedation, so we're hoping a new set of professional eyes might shed some light.
Her family are dedicated to helping her and they've been coming regularly to me. We started with pairing the scissors with food and then started desensitising the clippers. It was a relief for all of us when I was able to start removing her matted coat. Yesterday she let me clip her bum for the first time. We've slowly been building a relationship with her family staying. She needs less and less reassurance and is gaining in confidence. We've recently started luring her up the stairs into the bath to slowly try to desensitise that.
She's a very sweet girl, I'm very proud of her & hope as a team we can keep making her life betterπ€πΎ
