British summer… one minute sunshine, the next your tack is dripping wet! 🌧️
Rain happens, but leaving leather soaked or putting it away damp can lead to stiff leather, mould and cracked stitching. Here's how to keep your tack happy after a wet ride:
▪ Let it dry naturally. Place your tack somewhere with good airflow and allow it to dry slowly. Avoid radiators, airing cupboards or direct heat, which can dry leather out and make it brittle.
▪ Wipe off mud and moisture. Use a clean cloth or sponge to remove excess water and dirt before it has chance to dry onto the leather.
▪ Replenish the moisture. Once fully dry, apply a leather balm or conditioner to replace the natural oils lost during soaking.
▪ Check your stitching. Wet conditions can weaken stitching over time, so give girths, reins and billets a quick inspection before your next ride.
▪ Store in a dry, ventilated place. Tack rooms and lockers can become damp quickly. Good airflow helps prevent mould and mildew.
A little extra care after a soggy ride will keep your tack supple, safe and ready for the next outing… whatever the British weather throws at us!
