When people think about dog socialisation, they often picture dogs playing together.

But an important social skill for many dogs is simply learning how to be calm around others.

Sitting nearby.
Relaxing together.
Existing without needing constant interaction.

For some dogs, that can be much harder and much more valuable, than play itself.

These quieter moments help dogs learn:
• how to settle around distractions
• how to cope around other dogs
• that they don’t always need to engage

And that’s a really important life skill.

We often notice behaviour when dogs are loud, excited, or struggling. But some of the most important moments to notice are the quiet ones.

The soft body language.
The relaxed pause.
The calm choice to settle nearby.

These moments matter. Because when we acknowledge and reinforce calm behaviour, we help dogs learn that feeling settled and relaxed is worthwhile too.

Not every training moment has to be exciting or active.

Sometimes progress looks like this, a happy dog quietly noticing the class happening around them.

💚🩷 What calm moments have you noticed from your dog recently?

One of the biggest misconceptions in dog training is that dogs should “just know” after being shown something once or twice. But learning doesn’t work like that.

Dogs learn through repetition.

Through practising skills in different environments.
Through making mistakes.
Through gradually building understanding over time.

That’s why progress can sometimes feel slow. Especially when distractions, excitement, or emotions are involved.

Training isn’t about expecting perfection straight away. It’s about creating enough successful repetitions that the behaviour becomes familiar, predictable, and easier for your dog to choose.

Small, consistent moments matter far more than getting everything perfect.

Dogs communicate with us all the time.

But how we respond to that communication often changes depending on the size of the dog. Small dogs frequently have their signals ignored. Large dogs are often expected to stay calm and tolerant no matter how they feel. But size doesn’t change emotion.

All dogs deserve:
• space when they need it
• their communication to be respected
• support before they become overwhelmed

When subtle signals are repeatedly ignored, dogs often learn they need to communicate more loudly to be heard. Understanding body language and respecting those early signs helps dogs feel safer, more understood, and better able to cope.

Because every dog, regardless of size, deserves the opportunity to communicate safely.

Living with dogs isn’t just about training sessions. It’s also about the quiet moments, the routines, the walks, the connection we build over time. Sometimes the most important part of our relationship with dogs isn’t what we teach them…

It’s how safe, comfortable and understood they feel alongside us. Training matters. But so does simply enjoying life together.

💚🩷 What’s your favourite quiet moment with your dog?

Exercises like “leave it” aren’t just about stopping dogs from picking things up.

They’re about helping dogs learn to pause, think, and make better choices. For puppies especially, that takes practice. Their brains are still developing, and impulse control doesn’t come naturally straight away.

By teaching these skills gradually, and making success achievable, we help puppies learn how to:
• slow down
• tolerate frustration
• focus through distraction

And those skills carry over into everyday life far beyond the exercise itself.

No two dogs learn in exactly the same way.
- Different ages.
- Different experiences.
- Different starting points.

What feels easy for one dog might feel much harder for another. That’s why good training isn’t about following a set formula. It’s about adapting to the dog in front of you and helping them succeed at their own pace.

Whether in a class or through more tailored support, the goal is the same: Clear, calm, achievable learning.

Puppy training can feel inconsistent. One day they seem to understand everything…The next, it feels like they’ve forgotten it all.

There’s a reason for that. Puppies’ brains are constantly changing.

They’re learning how to:
• process the world around them
• regulate their emotions
• build memory and understanding
• cope with new experiences

That development isn’t smooth or predictable. So what looks like “forgetting” is often just part of the process. It’s not about doing things perfectly. It’s about giving them the time, repetition and support they need while everything is still changing.

Play isn’t just about burning energy. It can be a really important part of building confidence.

For many dogs, games create a space where they can:
• make choices
• interact without pressure
• succeed and feel good about it

That matters. Because confidence doesn’t just come from training exercises. It comes from experiences where dogs feel able to engage, explore, and enjoy what they’re doing.

For some dogs, play can help them:
• feel more comfortable in new environments
• build positive associations
• become more resilient overall

It doesn’t have to be structured or complicated. Sometimes a simple game is enough.

Take a moment to watch this video of our Good Pup Spud. What do you notice?
Ears forward.
Stillness.
Focused movement.

Dogs are constantly communicating through their body language, often in subtle ways that are easy to miss. Moments like this can tell us a lot about how a dog is feeling, what they’re paying attention to, and how close they might be to reacting.

When we learn to notice these early signs, we can:
• give more space
• reduce pressure
• support calmer outcomes

Because behaviour doesn’t start with the reaction. It starts much earlier.
