Our local shows really are some of my favourite. August is the month of Scottish Championships which was super busy this year with 6 provisional standards, 87 varieties entries and 74 pet entries. The Beeghos team did not bad!

I am absolutely over the moon to announce that Banshee has finished her show career on 13 stars, 2x BIS, 1x RBIS and 1x BOA wins (as well as a 3rd Supreme back in September 2025) which should qualify her for the titles of Gold Champion and Show Champion. Just in time before the deadline for claims applications for 2026!! I didn’t think she had it in her as she’s on the older side for a black show rat but I’m so glad I brought her out one last time. She has had a date with a lovely stud buck after the show so hopefully we will have some baby Banshees next month. Miss Berry has also been paired at the same time to the handsome Thyme for some agouti (and maybe cinnamon) babies 👀

The two older litters are well and truly on the move now with all their peepers wide open! The other two aren’t far behind although I am slightly disappointed there is not a single ivory in the youngest litter 😅 I am glad everyone has survived the awful heat wave but I suspect due to the high temperatures the mums may have been slightly reluctant to sit on their nests for prolonged period of times so the kittens aren’t as fat as I’d like them to be at this stage. I’m sure they’ll catch up in no time though ❤️

Our summer litters have safely arrived and oh boy am I excited for these! We have a litter for the PED line which is a mix of champagne with a few silver fawns, a small litter of agouti and cinnamon as well as two litters for the ivory line which are ivory and some other assorted colours in the younger litter in top ear and dumbo. My champagne doe has taken on the five kittens from my agouti doe Polly (bred to Beeghos Out Of Thyme) as Polly unfortunately lacked the maternal instinct to take care of her babies and it was in everyone’s best interest to remove them. They’re thriving with their new mum and adopted siblings ❤️

Dr Squid (PhD from the University of Life) is here to talk to you about Hantavirus, which you'll no doubt have seen in the news recently ⚠️🐀

The cruise ship passengers affected by Hantavirus were infected with the Andes strain, which has a fatality rate of 35-40%, affects the lungs, and is transmissible human-human. It's spread through airborne transmission.

The Andes strain originates from South America and is generally carried by the long tailed Pygmy Rice Rat, and not the humble Norway Rat like Squid and his wild counterparts!

The only strain identified in the UK is the Seoul strain, which affects the kidneys and has a fatality rate of about 1%. The Seoul strain is not transmissible human-human.

Pet rats may carry hantavirus, and so precautions should always be taken as with any live animal.
