Dr Squid (PhD from the University of Life) is here to talk to you about Hantavirus, which you'll no doubt have seen in the news recently ⚠️🐀

The cruise ship passengers affected by Hantavirus were infected with the Andes strain, which has a fatality rate of 35-40%, affects the lungs, and is transmissible human-human. It's spread through airborne transmission.

The Andes strain originates from South America and is generally carried by the long tailed Pygmy Rice Rat, and not the humble Norway Rat like Squid and his wild counterparts!

The only strain identified in the UK is the Seoul strain, which affects the kidneys and has a fatality rate of about 1%. The Seoul strain is not transmissible human-human.

Pet rats may carry hantavirus, and so precautions should always be taken as with any live animal.

And just like that the babies have turned into proper little rats! It’s almost time to start thinking about weaning them and letting the grow independent from their mums.

You may have noticed there is one less kitten in the BBA/agouti litter. Very gutted to admit that I had to euthanise one of the two blue agouti does at about 3 weeks old due to what I believe to be a potentially genetic neurological condition. The sire of the litter is a fantastic rat but I will not be breeding him again. As this only leaves me with the one doe in the litter I will be bringing forward mating my older BBA does (from winter 2025 litters) for hopefully May kittens and using a different stud buck.

No wins in pets this time around but that’s ok! They’re not going to get much opportunity to shine this year as my show calendar is looking rather empty due to other commitments. Excited to judge some shows in 2026 👀

All babies and mums are doing fantastic ❤️. The champagne litter is particularly chunky, the rest are more normal sized. The one random champagne amongst the silver fawns doesn’t look like it belongs in there does it. I’ve also gotten super lucky with not one but two (!!!!) ivory dumbo does. We are starting to get the first hints of peepers appearing now so it won’t be long until they break the nests and start causing chaos.

Unfortunately the black doe did not take so no black litter this time around. I worry my stud buck could be too old to get the job done now, he is almost 2 years old and full sibling to my Platinum and Show Champion doe Beeghos Baroness so it would have been really lovely to have one last litter from him since his sister never managed to get pregnant when I tried last year. Oh well, we move onto plan B then!

Winter break is officially over as the first litters of 2026 have made an appearance and I am so so excited for them! This time around I am focusing on my pink eyed dilute line so there are some champagnes and silver fawns, as well as my black and blue line which will be agouti, British blue agouti and black with a small chance of cinnamon. Sadly I do not have any self British blues left in my rattery (for the first time since 2019 😭) but the ingredients are here should I wish to make them again in the future - hopefully the modifiers which produced that beautiful deep steely blue colour haven’t been lost.

There is also a litter for my ivory line but as they are from two carrier parents I may or may not get any ivories out of them. I did keep some from my winter 2025 litters so if there aren’t any this time around it’s ok, although admittedly I am hoping for an ivory dumbo doe with nice ears. Rat gods willing!! 🤞

Super proud of my team as always, Ruby, Fly, and BB absolutely smashed their first time out on the show bench and will hopefully continue to do well. Miss Blacklist came back for one last show after an extended break to have a litter and only went and qualified for her Silver Champion title 💪. She won RBIS/BOA at Bradford in January and 3rd Supreme at the Scottish show in March so will now be retiring to live out the rest of her life as my much loved pet.

Kitten spam for your viewing pleasure 🥰 I haven’t had it in me to get my light box and camera out these last few months so phone pictures will have to do for now!

All of these gorgeous babies have been weaned or are just about to be, some are on my potential keepers list and others will be looking for new 🏡s in the coming weeks so this may be a good time to remind everyone that my waiting list is still ⚠️ OPEN ⚠️ for a short period of time.

I’m going to have the hardest time picking names for this lot 🥺
